The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells... there are 4 novellas and one short story that form it, and a full-length novel, Network Effect, is coming out in May and they are all excellent reading. Murderbot, which is what he calls himself, is a cyborg security bot who hacked into his governor chip/programming that kept him from becoming autonomous and able to do what he wants--which is mostly hiding in a closet watching his favorite TV serial, Sanctuary Moon, but he still has all these pesky "must protect soft and too-easily-squished humans" compulsions. It's basically a "becoming a full human" story told from his hilarious POV. (And if one of the reasons I love it is because Murderbot gives me strong "Bucky Barnes recovering" vibes, so be it. *g*)
Because of course the next step in his evolution into a Real Human would be to write poetry! *g*
When May 5 rolls around and Network Effect magically appears on my Kindle... I am hiding myself in a cave with a box of donuts and a lot of coffee to read it and will not emerge until I've finished. *g*
