Sam Uley's Gang

He hates that people call it a gang, especially since all they do is help people out. Sam Uley has done more for the reservation in the last six months than anyone has in the last 21 years! So what if sometimes the boys want to let off steam, have some fun. It's hard holding back the strength and speed all the time.

It's also hard that so many of the young boys on the rez hate him so much. Jared and Paul sometimes get a little too intense about the growing pack. They can't wait for Jacob and Quil to join them. Sam can't wait, too, since he hopes Jacob will want to be the Alpha sooner rather than later. But the more of them there are, the easier it will be on everyone. Running patrols with only three wolves is tiresome. And the baggage that comes with being considered a gang isn't helping.

The worst of it comes down on them after the whole Bella situation. You'd think after he saved her life, the girl would be a little more forgiving. If only Billy had explained the whole thing to Jacob ... But Billy refused, saying Jake had to learn on his own, that he wouldn't believe in werewolves even if Sam phased right there in front of him. So that meant, Jacob went around complaining about the gang to Bella and she shot her mouth off to her father. Now whenever Sam leaves La Push, Cheif Swan is all but following him in a squad car. (He doesn't leave La Push much in the first place but it's still bothersome, especially when he ends up naked in the woods terrified the Cheif will see him.)

Jared and Paul often think Sam is too serious. Really, he just wants to instill some pride in them. Sam knows deep down into his bones that they will be needed -- especially with the Cullens gone. He needs them to understand how important it all is. They can't lose focus for a minute. Even when he swan dives off the highest cliff above First Beach, Sam's senses tense, ready for anything.

Sam's Pack

It seems like half the reservation knows about everything these days. At least, all the teenagers do which is causing some worry for their parents. Now Sam really looks like he runs a gang. Embry's mom even came up to him on the street one day and accused him of hooking her son on drugs. (Poor Ms. Call, who should be allowed to know everything. But he can't make exceptions for Embry who might be his brother and not for Jared and Paul and Brady and Colin... It was just too dangerous, too much.)

Now they roam like a real pack, always travelling with at least one other person. No wolf could be caught by himself (or herself, Sam corrected bitterly), even inside the boundaries of La Push. He even makes Jacob take a buddy everywhere, which is getting harder and harder because of the Bella situation.

Bella Swan, the vampire magnet, is always causing trouble for Sam and his pack. He can't wait until she marries her leech and disappears into the sunset. He can't wait for Jacob to imprint on anyone just to give everyone a break from the misery in his mind.

Sometimes, Sam doesn't think he's a great leader. Sometimes, he can't wait until Jacob is strong enough to bear the burden of being Alpha. Then he can give it all up -- stop phasing, have a bay, grow old. But his pack comes before all his hopes and dreams now.

The Black Pack

It was never supposed to be a pack. It was just supposed to be Jake going off on his own, a pack of one. Things never work out for him the way he wants. Jake should know better at this point. Although it wasn't a surprise that Seth followed him. Seth was just waiting for someone to open the door. Leah, on the other hand, came out of anger and self-pity and desperation. Jake hates that he can feel her emotions rumbling under every word she says. He wishes she would just go away (and he hates that she can feel that under everything he says. If anyone understands what he's going through, it's Leah).

Even after everything, Jake is surprised that La Push can have two packs of werewolves. But he also knows he'll send them all back to Sam before he leaves for good. He can't have the people he loves in his head wherever he is going. Embry makes it the hardest on him. He acts like Jake is betraying them. At least Seth and Leah and sympathetic. Quil gets it of course (every time Jake thinks of Nessie, Quil's thoughts echo with Claire).

Embry doesn't get it. He's not sympathetic. He's angry, he's hurt, he's alone really. (Under every word is longing. They might be brothers and he's jumping ship for a half-mutant baby. It stings but Jake lets it go. He has to. He doesn't want to leave on bad terms.)

The Black Pack doesn't last very long, only a couple months. Jake doesn't cry when they leave Forks and La Push. Bella promises they'll go back but he's not sure. Now that he really is a wolf without a pack, he isn't sure why it was something he ever wanted.

The Old Wolf

"Seth, of course," Jake says. He had imagined a lot of scenarios on their trek back to Washington and Seth was always the clear choice. But every time he imagined the youngest Clearwater, he saw the fresh-faced boy with more enthusiams than any of them. Jake never for a second thought he'd see such an old man in front of him.

"You look exactly the same," Seth tells him, but his voice is deep and gravelly. He's a little hunched and Jake thinks he probably hasn't phased in 20 years if that. His heart sinks. This was a terrible idea. He never should have come back.

"Anyone else?" he asks, scared of the answer whatever it is, regretting asking it the moment the words are out of his mouth. Seth's eyes are sad.

"You missed a lot, Jake." There is a long pause. Too long. It's like Seth doesn't want to say the next thing but they both know he's going to. "You shouldn't have come. It's just me. I can't..." His voice breaks and he sounds like a little kid for a second. "I don't think the tribe can handle any young werewolves at the moment." He continues when he regains his composure.

Jacob expected this so he has his answer ready. "I can teach them. I can guide them. It will be different this time." He's so heated, so passionate, he feels the wolf course through his body. Jake learned to control his emotions a century ago that the feeling is unexpected.

Seth shakes his head. "You left, Jake. You should have stayed gone." Both of their hearts were breaking. Jacob doesn't say anything else, just turns and walks back to the glass house in the words on his two human feet. They don't ask him any questions but they are already in Canada by the time the sun sets. (Bella was the only one who unpacked her clothes. Jake caught her crying as she folded up her jeans that afternoon. He wondered if it was harder for her to leave the second time. He never asks.)

They never go back.
