I'm not going to lie-- I don't think you should stay in contact with him. You both need to put it behind you, and while this truly sucks, it DOES NOT INVOLVE YOU. A simple 'I'm sorry for your loss.' and then nothing else, is appropriate.

If he tries to get you back, just ignore him. Reread the e-mails where he insulted you, or talk to the people who support you. He is no longer your concern.
