Even better, some reports say it was sixty people crammed into the shameon's death trap. I'm going with the more conservative number until I get confirmation. Apparently sixty-some people were at the retreat, and 21 or so went to the hospital. Beyond that and the two dead, three critical, reports are varying. ARGH!
I know. ... Actually, some of those shows base new episodes on stuff in the headlines. I just hope if they decide to do a show based on this that they talk to people in the know. Al Carroll from NAFPS is doing some media today, so hopefully the word is being spread that these people were ripping off Indian ceremonies, and that's a huge part of the problem. Many Native people are worried the mainstream media will mis-report this as an Indian ceremony, or say that Indian ceremonies should be outlawed again. Instead, it's the frauds who need to be stopped.

Multiple counts. USA Today has released the names of the dead, and the conditions many of the people were treated for:
"Nineteen other people were taken to hospitals, suffering from burns, dehydration, respiratory arrest, kidney failure or elevated body temperature. Most were soon released, but one remained in critical condition Saturday."
Kidney Failure. Can you say bullying people into not drinking water, anyone?
It looks like they really did have the larger number (50-60 people) crammed in there all at once. From the description of the "ceremony", I'd say Shameon James Ray was definitely basing it on his twisted ideas of Indian ceremonies. And they have a tipi on the grounds... with a Yin-Yang symbol on it. Nope, no cultural appropriation here; "it's all universal

Holy privilege, Batman. WTF. Just in case anyone needed further proof that we are not yet living in a post-Colonial society.
