it's transition time again. my contract here at mackenzie is up on friday. my options are a) renew said contract and continue my role as an envelope stuffing goddess, b) go back to the salon as the "desk manager" which is really just reception with a few more responsibilities and once again cater to the lovely yorkville women i enjoy so much (ha ( Read more... )

As someone who chose not to go back to school when faced with this decision when I was about your age, I'd advise you to do it. Not just because I still dream of school supply shopping every September, but it will increase your job options later. I have felt pretty limited without a BA at times. (I'm ridiculously close to finishing it but never have.) Of course, the grass is always greener.

"the thought of financial stability and independence are so appealing. the thought of being able to build a home, have the opportunity to take a real vacation, become more grown up seem like some far off dream and not something that i would ever have the capacity to accomplish."I feel the need to warn you - as someone who got a 'career' and bought a house and now lives happily in the burbs - be warned! Whether you like it or not, with drastic change such as stability and responsibility your friends will dwindle away one by one until one day you realize that you're alone ( ... )

So, if you go back to the salon you'll be doing reception and not continuing your apprenticeship...??
If that's the case, forget options a&b. Take a few days to polish your resume shiny-smooth, and applyapplyapply. A lot of jobs pop up in the fall b/c of people going back to school, so hopefully you'll be able to find something that involves neither closeting fur-coats nor stuffing envelopes.
And on the school note, it's too late to go this term anyways, and i'm not sure about next term. Why not try and find yourself a manageable job for this year and over the fall work on university/college applications and figuring out a 5-year plan? Obviously that's easier said than done, but i know you and you have it in you to get back into your education - but it's not going to just come along and offer itself to you.

Oh, and i'm leaving less than two weeks...we should hang out.
