Summary: It wasn't that Taekwoon wasn't worried, it's just that Hakyeon is an idiot
Author's Note: Because I'm bored on vacation and Taylor wanted cuddles (not that there's much cuddling) and Anna wanted a kiss in the rain. Yue can wait for her damn puppies.
Taekwoon knew something was wrong, so when he got the frantic call from Jaehwan that Hakyeon still hadn’t returned to their shared dorm and it was already long past midnight, Taekwoon wasn’t surprised.
He may not have been surprised, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t worried. Because he was; he was beyond worried, and he promised himself that once he made sure Hakyeon was completely intact and well, Taekwoon was going to kill him with his own hands.
Before Taekwoon even ended the call with a concerned Jaehwan, he already had one arm in the sleeve of his jacket and was half way out the door of his own apartment off campus. He really tried not to panic, but almost without his own knowledge, the speed of his own steps increased until he was half-jogging to the entrance door of the apartment complex. Taekwoon was really worried once he pushed past the doors and felt drops rain hit his face.
Hakyeon hated being out in the rain. In fact he called Jaehwan, sometimes even Taekwoon himself, to ask for him to come pick him up because he didn’t want to be caught out in it.
Once Taekwoon was down the steps, he spared a glance both directions before he pressed the heels of his palms to his eyes. He had to think with his head, to use logic, if he was going to find Hakyeon. He couldn’t just go running around in a panic. Which he had no doubt that’s what Jaehwan was doing now.
Think Taekwoon, he told himself, where could Hakyeon have gone that he when he told the rest of them didn’t want them to come with him? Hakyeon wasn’t normally this stupid about this stuff, so Taekwoon really didn’t have a reason to worry, but something about how tense Hakyeon was when they were in the cafeteria earlier that day had Taekwoon on edge.
Its fine, Hakyeon had said as he gave a small smile when Taekwoon questioned it, I can handle it by myself.
Taekwoon hadn’t missed how his smiled tightened and eyes narrowed when his gaze rested on something on the far side of the room. When Taekwoon had turned to look too, Hakyeon grabbed his shoulder and kept their eyes locked as he asked Taekwoonto get food with him.
Something obviously wasn’t fine, and Taekwoon couldn’t help but think that he could’ve prevented this. But Hakyeon was just as stubborn as himself, so he knew there would have been no talking him out of it. Whatever “it” was.
Trust me, Hakyeon said with a smile and Taekwoon tried to.
And it was because Taekwoon knew how stubborn Hakyeon was that he thought he knew where to find him. As Taekwoon turned to the left, he slid his hood up and kept his head down. Jaehwan and Hakyeon had curfew, so Taekwoon hoped they wouldn’t get caught.
He had to find Hakyeon.
After ten minutes of following dead end pathways and streets, the rain had gotten heavier. So heavy that Taekwoon was forced to take shelter beneath an overhang by the mouth of an alleyway. He wanted to keep looking for Hakyeon, but if he couldn’t see more than two feet in front of himself, what was the point? He’d just end up missing the man.
As Taekwoon stood there and brushed the rain water out of his hair with a hand and rubbed the sleep away from his eyes with the other, he could’ve sworn he heard a groan from deeper in the ally. For a split second Taekwoon debated walking away from his current shelter, in favor of another one farther way so to avoid whatever was in this one, but then curiosity got the better of him and he found himself squinting his eyes to try and make out what was down the dark alley. When he didn’t see anything right away he figured he must’ve imagined it, but then he heard it again. Stepping out from underneath the overhang to get one last look, Taekwoon’s heart dropped into his stomach.
Just-half way down the alley, just behind a dirty dumpster, Taekwoon spotted a pair of black combat boots poking out. But not just any pair of boots, he knew those boots. He often thought about how well their owner looked in them. Taekwoon was rooted where he stood as a deep and painful dread filled his veins.
Hakyeon… he can’t-
But before he could finish that thought, another groan sounded through the alley, and Taekwoon breathed a sigh of relief. He knew that groan; it was a ‘shit I’m in pain, but I’ll make it’ groan. Once the panic left Taekwoon’s system, it was soon replaced by irritation.
Hakyeon was an idiot, Taekwoon concluded.
With slow steps, Taekwoon made his way over to where Hakyeon rested against the dirty brick wall. It was dark, so Taekwoon couldn’t see how bad of a shape Hakyeon was in until the head lights from a passing car shone in and what he saw made his gut clench. Discolored bruises littered Hakyeon’s face and arms, while the rain tried to wash away the blood from the cuts. Taekwoon eyed his friend’s busted lip as he lowered himself down to Hakyeon’s eye level, losing the bright light from the car to inspect him.
Hakyeon was the biggest idiot he knew.
Gently, Taekwoon rested his hand on Hakyeon’s shoulder and frowned when his eyes fluttered open. There was shock in them at first, but then they softened like he knew Taekwoon would be the one to find him. Taekwoon always found him. When neither of them made a move to say anything, Taekwoon shook his head and sighed. The rain had cleared up, and he needed to call Jaehwan, and he needed to get Hakyeon back to clean him up, and Hakyeon was an idiot. So that’s what Taekwoon told him.
“You’re an idiot.”
Nothing else, just that.
“I know,” Hakyeon sighed out then groaned as he tried to sit up straighter, but Taekwoon made sure to push him back and hold him there. “I just- I had to. I needed to do something.” Taekwoon watched with a steady gaze as Hakyeon tried to act like he was fine while avoiding Taekwoon’s eyes.
He was far from fine- nothing that couldn’t be fixed with rest- but he still wasn’t fine.
“You didn’t need to get your butt handed to you, Hakyeon. You chose to.” Taekwoon told him this in a quiet voice as he wiped some of the blood, dirt- Taekwoon couldn’t be sure in the dark- away from Hakyeon’s face as the latter chuckled.
“To be fair, that wasn’t the plan.”
“Then what was the plan, Hakyeon?” Taekwoon tried not to snap, but he felt drained enough as it was. He didn’t want to beat around the bush with Hakyeon. He needed to know why Hakyeon thought this was a good idea. Finally, Hakyeon’s eyes turn to look up at Taekwoon, and through the dim lighting casted by a lamp post further down the street Taekwoon could see the firm line of Hakyeon’s frown.
“I’m sick of them talking shit about you, Taekwoon,” The undertone of anger in Hakyeon’s voice made Taekwoon shiver. Hakyeon wasn’t a violent man, but Taekwoon knew how loyal he could be towards those he cared about, but that didn’t stop the sinking feeling in Taekwoon’s gut. “I care about you, Taekwoon. I refuse to act like I’m fine with hearing them degrade you just because of your sexuality, or because you don’t fit into their definition of what’s socially acceptable, because you are ten times a better person than those jerks!” Hakyeon looked like he had more to say, but before he could get another word out he broke off into a coughing fit, and Taekwoon couldn’t help but smile a little.
Hakyeon was such an idiot, Taekwoon thought as he covered his face with his free hand, and Taekwoon was an even bigger idiot for loving him.
“Hakyeon- you don’t have to-” Taekwoon tried to string together some form of a coherent thought, but he couldn’t. Finally, he just stopped and narrowed his eyes at Hakyeon, fully aware that the other could make out his blush in the faint lighting. “You are an idiot, you know that right?”
“You only tell me that like seven times each day,” Hakyeon laughed as he reached for Taekwoon’s fallen hand.
Hakyeon wasn’t big; he wasn’t strong; and he nagged too much at times. But Taekwoon couldn’t imagine where he’d be if he never met the man. He also figured that he wasn’t just imagining the look in Hakyeon’s eyes as he brought Taekwoon’s open palm to rest against his bruised face. Maybe this had been mutual all along.
Taekwoon knew that embarrassment still colored his face and that he must’ve had a sour look on it judging by the grin Hakyeon was sporting, but he couldn’t bring himself to care. Even though it was still raining heavily, and even though when he kneeled down into a dirty puddle to get closer Hakyeon, Taekwoon made sure to cradle his face with gentle hands. Being careful not to lean too much weight on the injured man, Taekwoon settled himself in between Hakyeon’s legs. He used his thumbs to wipe away the last bit of dirty blood that the rain had failed to, before he leaned in and rested his forehead on Hakyeon’s.
“You are the stupidest person I know,” Taekwoon told him as he held his gaze, and watched as Hakyeon’s eyes crinkled up in happiness and then he finally pressed his lips to the other’s hurt ones. He lingered a little longer and let the joy of how Hakyeon tried to pull him closer fill him before he pulled back to give him a withering look. “If you ever do something like this again, I’ll personally make sure you end up dead.” Taekwoon felt his heart swell at the sound of Hakyeon laughing at this meaningless threat.
Taekwoon should call Jaehwan. He should tell him he found Hakyeon and that he was more or less okay, but when he looked down at the soft smile on Hakyeon’s face when he pulled at Taekwoon’s soaked jacket he couldn’t help it. He knew what he should do, but he decided it could wait a few more seconds.
He wanted to kiss Hakyeon again, and he wanted to kiss him right then.
So he did.
