Every Confessor before Kahlan has had to deal with this issue. Some grow to love the men they confess, others just do it for duty.
In the first book, the little sprite that helps Kahlan through the barrier to find Richard is dying, and it begs her to confess it so that it can die in happiness; I don't think being confessed is so bad, especially if they're not honourable people in the first place. They live with their terrible deeds, but after confession they get to love and cherish someone who becomes their sole purpose for being.
Wow, didn't mean to go so seep with all this, it's just fiction after all, but I don't think Kahlan is that fkd up, and as for Cara - there's lots of fic that gets around the problem of dying in agony, I'm writing one myself right now actually ;)
=D Yeah, I love how creative fic can get trying to get around the accidental confession issue. I'm toying with a few ideas of my own, too. Will you share your fic when it's done?
I'm hoping she neither dies nor goes off the deep end. I doubt anything too bad will happen, she's far too bad-ass! And the Good Guys have to win, of course!
