berries, babies

We're buried in berries here at the moment. Wild blackberry bushes grow all over the place here, and it seems that we're the only ones interested in picking the berries from them. There are bushes all along the route we often walk along, as well as on the outside of the parking lot for the University here. After spending a few days picking there ( Read more... )

Awww bebe. We still have the first ultrasound scans of ours also. I think they're in the baby books. At the later ultrasound, they gave us the video in addition to the still pictures. The kids are duly unimpressed when they see the video, even with our commentary.

Mmmm blackberries. We have some bushes in our backyard, the thornless variety. And I pretty much make cobblers, pies, jelly, tea and syrup out of ours.

wow a video! I imagine that won't be offered here. Thomas also wanted to know: was this video something that was part of the procedure, or something you had to pay extra for?

The thorns are annoying but the stinging brambles around here are worse. I seriously thought I'd managed to find some kind of instant-reaction poison ivy. At least the berries are tasty.

Surprisingly, the video was part of the procedure. It surprised me when the doctor asked if we wanted a copy because I didn't know anything was being recorded other than the snapshot type pictures. And we didn't pay extra for it, as far as I know. We paid a flat fee to the doctor (I can't remember the exact amount, but for both kids c-section deliveries, I seem to recall it being in the $800 range each ... I do think I saved the bills which are somewhere, again, in the baby books) for all the pre- and post-natal care as well as the delivery, and we never received a hospital bill.

Ooh, baby pix! *gets all nostalgic*

Thanks for reminding me about the blackberries. Must take kids picking. If this rain ever stops.

Cookieman continues to be amazed at the lack of interest in the berries here. He said if we were back in Germany, we'd be fighting other people off for access to the free, abundant berries. I'd actually think it would be the same in the US, so it's sort of curious that they aren't popular here. It's not as if the bushes we're picking from are hidden somewhere.

*hits snooze on own bio clock*

You should make Jam or jelly

Jam would certainly be a lot healthier than the cobblers I keep making. If we amass enough berries it might be worth investing an afternoon in making jam. (okay that's based on the last time I helped anyone make jam, and I was like 8 years old at the time. It's possible I could be exaggerating.)

I love making jelly. I used to do it every year but, I guess I just got lazy because now I just have POUNDS of blackberries in my freezer... waiting in vain.

poor little berries

Awww, it makes it all seem much more real, seeing the picture like that.

I can remember going blackberry picking as a birthday treat when I was little, but they're considered noxious pests now, and are poisoned on sight. My Mum used to make lovely blackberry pies.

yes having the technician pointing out the moving baby parts was really interesting. I know ultrasounds aren't great photos (mine here is no exception - I admit, I've never been a fan of the photos and this one looks like every other one out there!) but it does remind me of the experience of seeing the baby move around for the first time. And it DOES feel 100% more real now that I've seen it in there, versus just getting bigger on the outside.

I thought of you when we were picking berries the first time. I remember you telling me what a hassle the bushes were in SA. I remember thinking it was a shame, but I can see how they really can take over a whole swath of land. Tasty or not. :(

haha yeah I said something about if they were basing the due date on the size of the baby's head that it's going to come out in December or something. Based on family history of huge heads, I mean. eh.
