recipe skimming

Itching to be inspired by something new, I've been perusing online recipes posted by various food blogs and other trusted sources. In the process, I've found another use for the load of blackberries the freezer can barely contain. I've also made some observations I felt like sharing here:

LOL, yeah, I can't stand that. "This was a great recipe! I added 7 cloves a garlic and used butter instead of cream cheese and chicken instead of beef!"

We've discussed this. I hardly ever follow a recipe to the letter...I'm like you, a cook by what's on hand. I use recipes as a guide. (For example, tonight I am making brie chicken - lol, I think I got the recipe from Allrecipes! - but I also have 2 (don't ask) jars of pear ginger preserves - which I tasted for the first time on a cracker with brie. So, I'm making a sauce and adding it.) Like you needed to know what I was making for dinner. LOL.

hah yeah exactly. And that carrot cake experience sticks in my mind as well because I DON'T usually stick to the letter of the recipe, but I did that time because I wasn't comfortable with making a carrot cake (ie, I knew the carrots would add some kind of moisture, but I didn't know how much, etc.) Oh well, live and learn.

and you know, I bitch about them, but I do continue to use Allrecipes, at least sometimes. :D It's such a huge database, and it always seems to pop up when I've got some odd ingredient I want to use.

Your dinner sounds awesome!

Thanks! Let's hope it delivers. I'm up in the air about a side dish and a veg...

So share what you're going to do with some of the blackberries. And ha ... Scamdra Lee and her Semi-homemade crap. Love the article you link to. To this day, I remember when I watched her for the first time. She took out a tub of Cool Whip and instructed people to mix in a couple of teaspoons of vanilla extract to the tub because the vanilla would make the Cool Whip taste more homemade. Lord. Because you know it's so hard to whip real cream.

I had to find the link again, but the recipe is here. You might not be able to access it without signing up to the website. If so, let me know and I'll type it up. It's a Berry Buckle recipe. Hers calls for blueberries, but I used the blackberries and it's quite tasty. I also made a cobbler and a crumble, but Thomas prefers the buckle because it's more cakey. I think I liked the cobbler the most (I just went with some basic cobbler recipe which appeared on several sites because it had won some bake-off awards. Dead simple, too.) This whole project has made me wish I had some of the cookbooks from the TX state fairs I went to! My ex's mom used to enter the contests there, and bob knows anything that actually won in that sort of competition had to be good. :D ( ... )
