Of course our lives are still mostly baby-centric at the moment, but I've got some other things on my mind as well.

Has anyone read Pillars of the Earth? I read it back in high school, and I loved it. It's been more than 10 years since I last re-read it, and I can't say I remember a lot about it beyond the interesting cathedral facts, but I've ( Read more... )

I too loved Pillars of the Earth, I never enjoyed his other work though. I read the sequel in January and loved it.
Your comments with it are all true though, but I liked the three main characters. They did get tiresome. Maybe it is a load of old rubbish. It's almost as though he is forcing them to have modern day values and problems. Hmm. Yes, it's twaddle most of the time. Damn!

oh, as usual you get right to the heart of the matter! It's almost as though he is forcing them to have modern day values and problems. This sums up most of the issues I have with the book.

I might just be feeling really nitpicky! :D

I read them both in succession a couple of months ago. I absolutely loved POTE and I think you will love it again when you read it, I just don't know how anyone couldn't. With the other book, at first the characters were far too similar to POTE (same characteristics, but flatter) but after a couple of hundred pages I really started to get into the book and at the end, I still really liked it. So maybe it will be the same for you?

yes maybe! I picked it up again this evening while I was feeding the baby, and I think it's likely that I'll finish it, at least. Might as well, I've gotten this far!

i'm just about done rereading Pillars of the Earth. i read it before bed and basically fall asleep with the book in my hands midsentence. disappointing to hear he's written such a pile of crap. :) i'm surprised it still keeps me gripped since i've already read it, but it was probably ten years or so ago??? back when you originally recommended it. :)
