I have a couple of occasions to make cut-out cookies for over the next week (Valentine's, plus a party at the end of the week.) Is it possible to freeze the dough successfully? I could also make the cookies themselves and freeze them, but I think the end result wouldn't be as good ( Read more... )

I've frozen dough and also frozen the baked, cut-out cookies with equal success. I found pre-frozen cookies indistinguishable from fresh, actually, but maybe it depends on the recipe.

It's cool with babies, because you can put anything on that cake and it'll be cute. He hasn't yet sworn allegiance to Batman or Thomas the Tank Engine yet. (I wish someone had told me to savor those moments.) Maybe something with a face? Or would it be traumatic then to cut into it? I can't wait till Brooke's birthday because I'm making this one:

I wish I could help with recipes. I suck mightily at homemade cakes. I'm great with frosting, but I cannot make a cake that doesn't end up with the consistency of cornbread, and that's WITH sifted cake flour. Most vexing. I can't wait to see what you come up with. Let us see the cookies, too!

Ever since I discovered the Super Awesome Chocolate Cake recipe, I haven't made another cake from scratch since (er, excluding cheesecakes, apple cakes, etc - I mean of that sort of plain frosted cake style. If I'm making sense.) I can't even remember my luck with yellow cakes. And honestly, if it's just a bunch of kids mowing through it, I'd be fine with using a (touch the pearls) boxed cake mix ( ... )

I'm with Laurel on having luck freezing both cookie dough and baked cookies. I haven't been able to tell the difference between the two.

What about cupcakes? It always seems to be tradition here that for the first birthday, the kid gets to make a mess of things.

I'm considering cupcakes for his own party. I'm not sure I want to bother with them for the group birthday party as they're a bit more difficult to transport (I think.)

I've frozen half my sugar cookie dough. I'll report back on how it works at the end of the week when I bake it. :) Thanks for the input!

You're hardly a lazy mother- you cake cook savouries like nobody's business. I'm just terrible at that.. or at least, it takes me 3x as long as anyone else to achieve a halfway decent result.

Kid cake decorating is a new challenge, we'll see how it goes. I'm thinking I'll be making the cake into a present box, with some kind of Fruit Roll-up substance (if I can find some here) as the ribbons. Otherwise it's going to be something like this. Cupcakes will be tough to transport for the big party, but I might do them for the home one.

Rice crispy treats will certainly feature at one of the parties. Probably the home one. I think my prenatal group, nice as they are, enjoys being a tiny bit showy-offy with the foodstuffs.

Also, if you've got any suggestions for some easy-ish party foods, feel free to share. :D Easy to eat off paper plate sort of things..

A normal person might have just said 'finger foods' here. sigh.

I also forgot to add, Martha has a one bowl chocolate cake recipe I can hunt down, if you'd like and post it here or email it to you. Let me know. I remember making it, years ago, and found it to be pretty good. And it translates to cupcakes, no problem.
