Why do some girlfriends think it's so cool to call their boyfriends by their full names, when everyone in the world calls them by their short name? Like a girl I work with always says "Matthew and I..." and everyone else calls him Matt...he introduced himself as such. Maybe it's an onwnership thing... Like girls feel that by calling them by their full name gives them a sense of ownership. Like "He's Mine, and Everyone Knows it". They call them by their full name because like your parents they have some kind of ruling or ownership over them that no one else has. It makes them feel "Special" to call them by their full name, no one else does. Sort of like a nickname.

Just a guess...
