Knee surgery journal

I just made my "reservation" for the rehab center: Masonic in Bloomington, on the bluffs overlooking the Minnesota River. My doctor says every one of his patients who has been there has liked it, and it looks really nice. We are splurging for me and paying a bit out of pocket (quite reasonable) for a PRIVATE room ( Read more... )

It'll be just like a vacation, except, y'know, for the anesthesia aftermath and the pain.

I'm glad you can have a private room.

I anticipate a lack of anesthesia aftermath if I have the epidural. Even if for some reason I must have general, my lifelong experience with it is that I come out quickly and have no nausea.

When I had surgery in January, I made a fairly big deal about how sick I always get from anesthesia/opiates, and the anesthesiologist stuck an anti-nausea patch (Scopolamine, if I remember correctly) behind my ear. I had no nausea at all afterwards, to my complete and utter astonishment and delight.

I'm very glad you likely won't have any nasty aftereffects.

Are you getting a knee replacement, or other kind of knee surgery? Either way, everybody I know who's had knee surgery has been very glad about it after the immediate unpleasantness was behind them. Knowing you've been having knee trouble for ever so long, I hope you'll be very pleased with the results.

Sounds like you need a vacation. I recall a friend being on the whole very pleased that she had had an emergency appendectomy, because afterwards she got to stay home from work and loll around reading whatever she liked for several weeks. At least you'll be swapping a bad part for a good one.

A private room seems like a very smart indulgence. I've heard several times from people with knee replacements that they were very happy they got them, that the reduction in pain in their lives was dramatic. Although they all caution: do your PT. But then, you knew that part.

Best of luck.
