True, it cost around $21 million dollars. However, the artists paid for it without drawing from any public funds or other money that would have been directed elsewhere, all the materials are being recycled, and it made an estimated $254 million in tourist revenues for New York City, the benefits of which were diffused across both businesses and cultural institutions.
Not that there weren't countless better uses for the money, but still, far worse examples of lavish expenditure have been seen.

uh-huh, cause trickle-down economics always works. ;)
that's true. but i still maintain that it's a very odd way to spend so much money.
