Well it was clearly because Locke mentioned what's her name, Faraday's mom. We'll find out why soon enough, I'm sure. That is actually the only new information we got this week, I think.
I think maybe Ben didn't realize the way they had to go back was through her, because going through her meant that locke would have to die, but once Locke revealed what he had to do, Ben understood that he needed to die. If Ben just wanted to get rid of locke, then he wouldn't have been toting his casket everywhere.
Honestly, I think he assumed that if he killed him, he'd stay dead, and he toted the casket because he was told Locke needed to go back for "it" to "work". I think he's just power hungry.
Also, I'd like to blame you, Jake, eqo, and lesvoyages for my Lost addiction. I made it to the second season without watching a single episode and you'd all rave about it and then I had to watch. UGH.
We did learn that Widmore was the leader of the others at one point until Ben tricked him into leaving. A lot of people guessed that, but to have confirmation was pretty cool. And even though he died, we learned a little more about Abaddon.
I liked this episode! I thought it was a lot more straightforward than others.

Locke has daddy issues, and it just breaks my heart every time he rolls up to somebody smiling and being happy and then they shoot him down.
