In my country, we have to sing national anthem, state anthem and assembly song. It's annoying to me and since I entered secondary school, I rarely sang it but I never thought about that it's my right to not sing the songs. It's considered an unspoken law that you have to sing national anthem whenever it's played, the anthem is to be respected and no one can ignore it. I felt annoyed by it when I was a student but now that I've grown up and having less and less chance attending an official event/school event, I never hear it again, with some exceptions that it's played on tv sometimes. Having said these, I have no problem with standing and singing. I didn't sing it but I know some people enjoy singing it.

Thanks for telling me your honest feeling toward national anthem, Thsbasa! Yours is similar to mine. I firstly didn't really understand why some public school teachers dislike singing national anthem with others. Still, I love my country but being forced to sing together each time is surely annoying sometimes.

We used to sing the National anthem and say the Pledge of Allegience every day in my elementary school, and the Pledge every day in middle and high school (in NY). We were allowed to sit, and I seem to remember I did most days (because there is not "liberty and justice for all", not do I believe in "under God"). Like most of the comments you posted, the Pledge bothers me more than the Star Spangled Banner ( ... )

>whereas Kimigayo is celebrating the Emperor and the system that led to WWII. Especially since the government still hasn't officially apologized for trying to take over all of Asia, it's rather questionable how appropriate it is to force students and teachers (at the risk of losing their jobs!) to sing the anthem

Thanks for pointing out this issue, dynamint! It is rather inappropriate to express the pledge of allegiance in our case. As German girl posted above, we should be forgiven not being too patriotic.

Good luck in your 教諭 job!
