September's winding down (don't worry, we'll discuss September's selection when I post the review on September 30th), and I want to give you all PLENTY OF TIME to vote for next month's selection, so let's get to it!
The theme: Classic Horror
I gave a lot of thought to this theme. On one hand, it's obvious, right? This is for our October book selection! But on the other hand, horror elements have become so common in fantasy these days that it's easy to forget that what's now hot and sexy used to be something else entirely. Monsters and metaphor. There's also the fact that there's a nerdy part of me that likes to go back to a genre's and/or its convention's roots, and what better way to do so than to go with Classic Horror? These selections offer roots to vampires, zombies, and werewolves, though the roots might not be THAT obvious. That's the whole point of the selections, to encourage discussion!
A few notes about the selection: I'd be remiss in not telling you that yes, I have read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein before, but that was back in 1996, when I was a sophomore in high school. I liked the book then, but I've been entertaining the thought of re-reading it to get an adult perspective. So don't feel like you should ignore that book just because I've read it once. And on the other hand, don't feel you should choose the book just because I plan on re-reading it. I'll get around to it one of these days, whether it's our challenge or not.
But I'd imagine, with most of these choices, that people will have already read them, but re-reading can't hurt, can it?
And I know some of these books are considered slightly more SF for various reasons, but because they depict actual monsters, I feel they qualify as horror. :)

Poll October Challenge You've got until midnight, September 30th to make your decision. Vote for the book that YOU want to read the most, and if you're torn, tough. You gotta pick one. :) If you've already read ALL of the books, pick the one you'd most like to re-read. If you're not participating, then maybe next month will bring something more to your liking. :)
I'll announce the official winner on October 1st, so don't pick up your copy (whether you buy or borrow) until I make it official. Unless, of course, all of these books are so appealing to you that you must have them all. In that case, have fun. :)
