Re: Edward and Bella's relationship could easily be analyzed as an abusive relationship Agreed. In Twilight I was able to handwave some of it away, but I couldn't ignore it any longer in Eclipse because Bella was genuinely scared of Edward. Tampering with her truck, tailgating her, making her feel like she was wrong to see a friend. Just no. It gets even more irritating when he claims that he was just keeping her safe. You don't do that to someone you love.
Re: Imprinting I truly dislike imprinting and how it's handled in this series. Like you said, it would hurt Bella if she did choose Jacob and he ended up leaving her. On the flip side, I see imprinting as taking away Jacob's freedom of choice. He would have no control over a crucial part of his life. Not to mention the person he imprinted on might not even want him. So I really don't see the point of imprinting other than an easy out for Meyer to resolve a sticky love triangle. Also, I found it quite disturbing that Quil imprinted on a toddler.
The whole notion of imprinting also made me wonder if it'd ever happened between members of the same sex? Obviously, I don't think the thought crossed Meyers's mind, but what's to stop it from happening? I want to read that story!
I think the icon I am using right here is VERY appropriate for this book (indeed, the whole series). I could go on about these books. Wait till you get to BREAKING DAWN - it becomes so WTF it becomes slightly better just based on entertainment value.
A friend forwarded me a link to your LJ as I've just finished reading Eclipse. Fantastic review - you put into words everything that I have had whirring around in my head
