Not reading the review *yet* but just wanted to pop in on here and say my copy arrived today. I'm super excited (and paid about half the cover cost). ;)

Wow, I'm impressed! How'd you pull that off? Did you wait for a used copy somewhere?

Nah, I caved and ordered it from Amazon for $13.

Ah. I'm a sucker and ordered directly from Subterranean so I would be guaranteed a copy. :)

Scalzi claims it's dark fantasy, but having read the excerpt on his blog, I agree with you. Science fantasy.

I'll pick it up eventually. Too much to read right now!

Oh, it's a short read! You can do it!

But what if it never exists in paperback? phoenixfalls February 24 2010, 03:04:37 UTC
Are you sure one WILL be able to buy in paperback? My experience with Subterranean has not led me to believe this is necessarily the case. . . they don't seem to do paperbacks, and a lot of stuff by authors I love has never yet been picked up elsewhere unless the author has expanded it (for instance, Elizabeth Bear's New Amsterdam and sequels; Connie Willis' Inside Job; and Kage Baker's Company stuff got reprinted by Tor only after she turned it into full novels).

The rating is more or less suggesting you find a cheaper copy. You're right: Subterranean doesn't always offer paperback, but I believe this will be available in other formats (eBook, maybe an anthology), or even cheaper hardcovers on Amazon. There's also the used option, if you're lucky enough to find someone who's selling it cheaper than they paid (hard to say when you consider Subterranean stuff is rather limited).

I think it's good, but not $20 good. :)

Started it last night. It seemed awfully grim so I read the end, which seemed depressing. I prefer some humor and lightheartedness somewhere in any grim book I read and I'm not sure I'll get it. I'll read the whole thing, but don't think it will be one of my faves. I do like his different take on gods and religions.

This definitely isn't Scalzi's usual in terms of humor, but I definitely think his take on gods and religions makes up for that. :)

Looking forward to it! It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts if you plan on reading this after OMW. Definitely two different styles! :)
