Hmm. Actually, I'm kind of intrigued by an urban fantasy heroine who's a mother (but then, I would be). I don't think it's something I've seen done before. I'll have to put this on my "things to look into when I'm less swamped with stuff" list.

It's one of the things that appealed to me about this one. It's interesting, but as I said in my review, I have such a hard time emotionally connecting because I'm not one and I've never been comfortable around kids. :-/

I'm reading ROSEMARY AND RUE now, and I notice that heroine's a mother too.

I haven't read this book, but found your comments about how the protagonist didn't really feel like a cop to be interesting. It reminded me a lot of how I felt about Urban Shaman. It kind of makes me worry that (as you said) Urban fantasy gets more popular, they're getting less discerning about their choices. Where people write about cops not because they know a lot about law enforcement, or are willing to do the research, but because it's convenient to the plot. It reminds me of those extra-trashy romance novels or soap opera shows where characters can be anything from doctors to airplane pilots, but the writers obviously don't know anything about the actual job. They just wanted to write a doctor/airline pilot romance.

Very good review. Yeah, Charlie is a big problem in this book, especially because she was a cop. I couldn't believe some of the stuff she did and what the other cops let her get away with. I mean.. seriously, don't cops have these things called LAWS that they uphold? As their job? Anyway.

Another baffling thing is that people talk about there being romance for Charlie in this book, which I wasn't seeing? There were secondary ones, but for Charlie, I thought this was a book that didn't have romantic subtext for the main char.

The Will versus Rex thing, yeah, I get. And then there's that guy who was working against bad dude from her dreams (sorry, the names are gone and I already mailed the book off), but so maybe that's it? Three souls, but two bodies, provided you think Will's still in his own body somewhere?

Hmm. Will, Rex and... umm.. Aaron? Or are you talking about the guy who was with the bad dude at first?

Hmm. None of them really made me think she should get together with them. I think I am just expecting some more signs than there was. It seemed like the Will situation was a big horrible mess, Rex was like this puppy and there didn't seem to be a real attraction, Aaron liked her sister, and the last dude was such a small character who was there briefly and gone. I guess Will is the strongest contender then. But... he really screwed up in my mind. Well, anything could happen in the next book.. I think I'll wait and hear what the reviews are like first before I decide to try it.

No, not Aaron. He's the one into the sister. The other guy, the one in league with the bad guy but not really. The two men's names I do remember that aren't Will/Rex are Hank and Aaron, and both of them have other interests. :)

But you're right, nothing is set up to give Charlie an OBVIOUS match, but when people talk about a love triangle/square, it's the two/three I'm referring to that I think they're honing in on. But this book definitely wasn't much on the paranormal romance side of things, so maybe people are reading too much into what little we have?
