I totally want another France. The extra days off, the three month vacations, and the guaranteed salaries are pretty much amazing. That is a hell of alot better deal than we have. I hate to break it to you - our present system isn't making any of us wealthier. So go Socialism! Yeah, Fight!
You obviously don't talk to business people. Most businesses won't touch France with a stick for all of the reasons you just mentioned. All of that sounds great, except if you can't find a job because of it.
Oh, I talk to enough. I spend a fair amount of time gossiping with European distributors that sell luxury items here in the US. Several of their clients are in France. Its a different model but they do very nicely for themselves. Its also very, very hard to buy out a business and move it to say China. One of my favorite companies has that problem now. They want to sell but the government won't let them unless the new owner either stays or keeps everyone on the pay roll. Personally I'm cool with that. I don't much like the idea of China getting any more business than they already have. That's especially true when it comes to making things. Anything really. If we had to go to full scale war tomorrow who do we have in the US that can start cranking out shells? Not nearly as many as we would have had in the 60's. Personally I respect France for taking a hard line on this sort of thing. Maybe, all that company makes is high end pens, and lighters. During WWII IBM made carbines. You just never know...
