The wind feels cool on Ginny's face and she smiles as she turns into it. The heat that has been stifling the countryside shows the first signs of easing with the sudden appearance of the breeze. It's been hot and still for what seems like forever and Hermione has just about run out of useful, helpful spells to keep her cool.
When Hermione makes her way carefully out onto the deck, holding two mugs in front of her, Ginny can't help but laugh at the determined concern that shows on her usually studious face.
When Ginny had first broached the subject of having a baby, Hermione had regarded it as purely a theoretical question and hadn't thought about it as a reality. But as Ginny thought more about it, she had realized how much a family meant to her. And so Ginny had been secretly delighted at her consternation when Ginny had announced her pregnancy. She was, however, taken completely by surprise when Hermione had offered to move into her home - just to make sure she was okay.
Ginny didn't mind having Hermione around. Their casual and undefined relationship had come as a surprise to them both after the end of the war, but worked in a way neither of them wanted to really sort out. Ron still thought they were crazy, but then he had never really gotten over Hermione and their brief relationship at Hogwarts.
Ginny found it comforting to have someone around again. The years after the war had been empty for her, the house she and Harry had lived in had felt heavy and silent. But, Hermione had filled some of the void left, and Ginny, in turn, found herself looking beyond the immediate future and making plans.
Hermione carefully handed the mug over and hooked a second chair closer and took a seat beside her. Ginny took a careful sip and smiled at the mild tea that had become a favourite of hers as her pregnancy advanced. Ginny watched Hermione drink silently for a few minutes before speaking.
"Busy day?" she asked quietly.
Hermione grinned. "Not really, the library's looking better now that the shelves are full again. You?" She asked, leaning forward.
Ginny grinned. "Yes and no. I finally got the bedroom upstairs cleaned and aired out. I hadn't realized it had been shut for so long," she explained seeing Hermione's concern flash across her face.
"You shouldn't have done that," she scolded her, "especially in this heat!"
Ginny grinned. She took another sip of the tea before continuing almost shyly. "Well, I wanted to get it ready for us," she explained, setting the cup down carefully.
Hermione tsked and raised an eyebrow. "You could have waited you know. And the baby's not due for another month, so there was no rush."
Ginny smiled and reached over for Hermione's hand. "I know, but you'll want to be settled before then, won't you?" she asked quietly, meeting Hermione’s eyes.
And as recognition dawned on Hermione, Ginny couldn't help but smile at her lover. Hermione slid to her knees and embraced her and Ginny leaned her cheek against her head. "You know how much I've wanted a family," she whispered.
Hermione nodded and standing slowly, held out her hands to Ginny. "Well, mommy-to-be, let's go and check out our new room."
Laughing, Ginny let herself be pulled to her feet and smiled as they walked into the house together - their home - and into their new life.
