The Frankeinstein Meme: #00

Mar 06, 2006 12:57

My own mix for the Frankenstein meme.

The Cover

I don't actually have a cover figured out yet. When I do, I'll amend this to reflect whatever the cover ends up being.

ETA 26 April 2006: I'm taking the files down to save bandwidth. If you mustmustmust have a song, please leave a comment, and I'll temporarily upload it for you.

between angels and ropes
a frankenstein mix

  1. A song that wakes you up in the morning.
John the Revelator, Depeche Mode (buy the album)

I love their new album, seriously. It's quite energizing.

  2. A song you loved in high school.
No Diggity, Blackstreet (buy the album)

I have this CD buried somewhere, but seriously. Senior year, man. Awesome. I think someone actually included a snippet of the lyrics in my yearbook.

  3. A song that mentions a dead celebrity.
A Rose is a Rose, Poe (buy the album)

Jezebel, Picasso, Gershwin, Tristan, Tzara, Man Ray, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Lenin, Stravinsky. It's kind of awesome, and very jazzy.

  4. A song you'd be embarrassed to listen to with your grandmother.
Walk the Dinosaur, Was (Not Was) (buy the album)

Not that there's anything vulgar about this song, but both my grandmothers were, like, classical musicians. They would have mocked me if they hadn't been so nice.

  5. A song that MTV will never play in a million, billion years.
Message to Apollo, Carina Round (buy the album)

It's an awesome song, but totally not MTV material. It leans too far towards beatnik coffeeshop.

  6. A song with a title that ends in y.
Mustang Sally, Jonny Lang (his albums)

This isn't something I have to explain, is it? Except I can't find the origin of the track, so now I'm unsure of whether the name of song is Mustang Sally, or whether it's performed by someone other than Jonny Lang. Woe! I'm just going by what's on the filename.

  7. A song that makes you crave something.
    Serenity, Godsmack (buy the album)

There was one month during a summer that I obsessively listened to a mix that included this song. Due to a confluence of events, hearing this song now makes me crave a shoebox_project chapter, an episode of Firefly, and a grande caramel macchiato from Starbucks.

  8. A cover song that you think is better than the original.
Paint It Black, The Tea Party (buy the album)

Truth be told, I'd never listened to the original until after I'd heard this song, but I'd still prefer this one. It feels more immediate, more urgent.

  9. The original of #8.
Paint It Black, The Rolling Stones (buy the album)

Though the original ain't half bad itself.

  10. A song that reminds you of a fandom OTP.
    Lapdance, N.E.R.D. (buy the album)

Thanks to a vid mimesere made, this song reminds me of Ronon of SGA. And thinking about Ronon makes me think Ronon/Teyla, and well. There you go. OTP!

  11. You have been caught mouthing the lyrics to this song.
Catch My Disease, Ben Lee (buy the album)

It's impossible to not mouth the lyrics when this song comes on. Well, it's impossible for me, anyway.

  12. A song that will always make you think of a movie.
The Blower's Daughter, Damien Rice (buy the album)

Thanks to a relentless advertising campaign, this song will always remind me of Closer. More specifically, Natalie Portman in soft focus, waiting to cross a street, just as Jude Law's voiceover begins.

  13. A song that should totally have fic written about it.
Woman King, Iron & Wine (buy the album)

    Blackbird claw, raven wing
    Under the red sunlight
    Long clothesline, two shirtsleeves
    Waving as we go by

    Hundred years, hundred more
    Someday we may see
    A woman king
    Wristwatch time
Slowin as she goes to sleep

    Black horsefly, lemonade
    Jar on the red anthill
    Garden worm, cigarette
    Ash on the windowsill

    Hundred years, hundred more
    Someday we may see
    A woman king
    Sword in hand
Swing at some evil and bleed

    Black hoof mare, broken leg
    Eye on the shotgun shell
    Age old dog, hornet nest
Built in the big church bell

    Hundred years, hundred more
    Someday we may see
    A woman king
    Bloodshot eye
Thumb down and starting to weep...

  14. A song you wish they'd play in elevators.
Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen (buy the album)

SERIOUSLY. How awesome would that be? We'd spill out of elevators dancing and singing like goofs every single time.

  15. You'll stop listening to this song when they pry your MP3 player out of your cold, dead hands.
Karaoke Soul, Tom McRae (buy the album)

Hey, I finally got a Tom McRae song on one of these mixes. But yes. I love Tom McRae, and this is the song that made me fall in love. (Thanks, crushw_eyeliner!) Since then, I've heard ALL his other songs, many of them in concert, and I've adored them all. This one still remains my favorite, however.

And yet he has continually refused to play this particular song live! Not only is it awesome, it is my grail.

Enjoy! And please comment--I'd love to hear what you think.
