Asterix in French can actually be a little daunting because of all the inside political jokes from the 1970s.
It's got a lot of use of idiomatic phrases and a lot of 'badly spoken' French.
If you want to go the 'graphic novel' route, I'd suggest Tintin over Asterix, because the language is clearer. They're also mystery stories largely, as opposed to comedy, though there's plenty of funny moments.
In particular, I'd recommend "Le Secret de la Licorne" and "Le Tresor de Rackham le Rouge" or "Objectif Lune" and "On a Marche Sur La Lune".

I don't suppose there are any novels that would work for student with one years worth of French?
Thanks for the suggestions - now I have to figure out where to buy them. I have vague memories of seeing them on Amazon/Barnes and Noble.
