Boston Area - need advice

Mar 10, 2008 22:07

Anyone know enough about the Boston to give me advice on choosing between Waltham/Newton and Malden/Revere. My distraction has a job in the middle of Cambridge somewhere and would like to take public transport. Also we're not sure about nice versus run-down neighborhoods.

Anyone?

I've lived in Medford and Waltham, and I've had friends in Malden, but haven't known anyone out in Newton. All of these places are reachable by public transport- buses mostly- but having made the commute myself, I'd be leery of trying to do that from Waltham/Newton. The Blue Line does extend to Revere, but I'm not sure what part of it, and the Orange Line has a few stops in Malden. The commuter rail is okay (Waltham and I'm sure Newton has that option) but only if he's sure he can adhere to the schedule; if he works late or unpredictably, he might find himself missing the last train.

And you need to consider how you're going to get to the train station. Most of the "nicest" neighborhoods are likely to be out of walking distance of the train-- but there are plenty of perfectly nice places around there; you'd really have to go and look around to see if what you're looking for is available nearby. I would NOT recommend trying to drive to the commuter rail, as the lots fill up instantaneously.

Thanks for the advice! Helped him move to Malden/Revere (we're on the border - Mapquest says Malden and our postal address is Revere).
I'm moving in late April.
