Frigid days in Southern California

Jan 12, 2013 07:20

Well, not so bad as most folks east of California or in Canada or in Europe. Just at freezing, which is horrendous for a lot of the tropical plants people have here. I think I heard that Boston was warmer than us. Will be whacking back some of my roses. They can survive as bushes but their leaves are looking yellow. Not at all happy with ( Read more... )

I think you need a little garden stool! It's so much easier to get up from not all the way down. :P

I think you're right. Sort of tired of plopping on my butt.

we are having snow storms. it is not as cold - about -10 C, but the wind sounds really unpleasant. so we just stay indoors. Dmytro is cooking fish soups :)

your garden has always helped you to regain the ease of mind. it would be sad if you had to give up on your plants.
maybe you have a small stool you can use while digging? you can either sit on it or put your healthy knee on it while stretching out the other leg so not to bend the hurt knee? I've seen my grandfather do something like this in his garden.

Not giving up on it. But may have to cut back this winter. Karl's back being so bad means I have to do most of the work which makes me exhausted. Whatever. Life goes on.

having health problems is never easy -- but in winter it is the saddest :(

I can't kneel any more either. But I did prune all the roses yesterday so go me! Gave me a lower backache but the task is done. Ibuprophen is my friend.

We haven't hit freezing yet but we'll be dangerously close this coming week.

You go girl! Have to whack back the roses myself over here. At least no kneeling on that one. Did dig up some earth with overgrowth of weeds. Ouch. But felt good to do it. And watered very well because of frigid air. So far have not lost anything.

What she said. The handles allow you to use your upper body strength along with your legs to get up and down. I've seen people with severely screwed up knees work in the yard with those.

No kneeler for me. It's not that I have trouble with kneeling itself, but putting pressure on the knee itself as all that is there is fragile bone and wires. The knee was smashed too much for it to be pinned.
