So. We got two bettas today, both girls. The lady in the store said two's FINE to have together and that the tank we were talking about? the 1.25 gallon? was the PERFECT size for two.

Then we get home and talk to funnel101 who's like "um. no." Poking around hopefully on the internet just backs up what she says so later we're going to go get a second tank ( Read more... )

Uh. That blue one's male. The females aren't blue.

They said you can tell from the tails and such and that that one is a girl. I dunno, there's pictures of female ones with similar colouring on the internet?

I saw the thing on Wiki about they're breeding females in the strong colours now (and I've never actually seen a female for sale because they're not colourful, but I also bought my last betta in 1997, so what do I know) but the fins don't mean squat, as the fins are indicative of the species. Unless you know, for example, that the blue one is a veiltail, that finnage is pretty pronounced compared to the other one.

Maybe you can and I'm all wet, but someone saying you can put two bettas in a tank together - well, you'd better have a goddamn big tank. My dad had a pair of piranha in a tank once, but it was a HUGE tank, and their natural territory sizes were about half the tank size or something - I remember that he said that they would patrol the centreline of the tank but they very rarely rumbled. And when someone says something that wrong, I sort of wonder if they know anything they're talking about.

Male bettas have MUCH bigger fins. Their faces are also more square. That is DEFINITELY a female.

Huh. I thought the bluish one was a male as well. And according to this you can house females together.

Yeah, at first I thought the blue one was a male (because of the fins, but then again, it could be a female as well, I'm not that experienced about fins ^_^)
But I did have a few betta's in the past: 1 male and 5 females.
You can house females together with no problem if the tank is big enough, but I guess that goes for all fish. Males will fight till death.
I have to say, I never had any trouble with my group of betta's, they never fought ^_^ ... never reproduced either :-S

they are so pretty! some of the females are so drab but sometimes they're very cool looking! you can house females together, but a larger sized tank is a good idea in case they have any sort of normal fishy squabbling, and generally people only put them together in a larger community tank setting; keeping them separate is also a good idea. whatever works for you and your fish. I mean, you'd notice pretty soon if you put them together and they didn't like it.

yay! bettas!! :D

I vote for "the fish" and "the other fish".
