Everything had been going well, too well. The job was almost finished, and just in time for the kick. Well, a few minutes before. They took the time to relax and begin to wait for the kick. Eames grabbed Arthur’s hand and with a sly look, said “Come, darling. Let’s have some fun before we wake up.”

“Do you think we’ll have time?” Arthur whispers.

“Look around, everyone else is relaxing. Ariadne’s fooling with the dreamscape, Cobb’s sitting having a cup of coffee...I’d say we have time.” And with that, the two of them were running. “Is there a reason why we’re running?” Arthur asked with a small laugh, as Eames let out a lighthearted chuckle. “Of course! It’s more fun that way, love.”

But then something happened. Arthur stopped running. There was blood flowing all over his suit. In what seemed to be a millisecond, every fiber of his being began to burn. “Eames-” he managed to yell out, watching as the other one stared, terror in his eyes. “Cobb!” Eames shouted, on instinct, as he dived to catch a falling Arthur.

“I-It...where’s the kick?” Arthur said. “I need to get out.”

“Shh, love.” Eames purred as he shouted for Cobb once more. “Cobb!”

“I know.” Cobb said out of breath as he rounded the corner. “Something’s gone wrong in the real world. Ariadne’s hurt.” He said before he looked to Arthur. “Shit.” he mumbled. “What happens when something like this happens?” Eames asked, looking up at Cobb - and the look on the other’s face was less than comforting. “I...don’t know.” was the answer he got.

“I’m going under.” Eames said, with a determined glint in his eyes. “Eames, you can’t. The kick is coming, there’s not enough time.”

And just like that, the kick came. The team awoke to chaos, guns firing and ex-jobs invading. Cobb went to care for Ariadne, who had only been grazed by a bullet. Eames ripped the IV out as he went over to Arthur, laying there bleeding with eyes still closed. “Arthur...” he yelled. “Arthur!”

“Eames!” Cobb barked, “We need help over here!”

“I need to help Arthur!” He shouted. “Cover me!” and with that, he re-inserted the IV in to his arm, kept Arthur hooked in and pressed the button, slipping back under.

He returned to where they were before, Arthur struggling on the ground. “You’re back.” he managed, weakly. “Hush, darling.” Eames said quietly, as he once again hooked the two of them up again. “If I take you deeper, maybe you won’t hurt as much.”

“But, we need a kick.” Arthur choked out. “Covered, darling.” Eames said. “See you in a moment, love.”

With that, they were deeper. This time, the two of them were in Paris. “Paris.” Arthur said with a smile, standing and seeming like there was nothing wrong. “You always loved Paris.”

“Bien sûr , ma chérie.” Eames purred, happy to see Arthur wasn’t as bad down on this level. “Let’s go to that cafe you love.” he said as he grabbed Arthur’s hand. The two of them let their fingers lock as they strolled down the cobblestone streets. It worked... Eames thought to himself, the two of them reaching that little cafe they loved so much. “Deux cafés, noir.” Eames said to the projection of a waitress who nodded.

They sat and talked, sipping on their coffee. Eames was feeling confident going deeper had fixed everything. “Eames...” Arthur said, causing him to feel uneasy. “I...something’s wrong.” Eames felt a lump in his throat, though he tried to play it off as nothing. “What’s the matter, darling? Too much caffeine?” He said lightheartedly. “No, there’s just this odd pain in my chest. Is something happening in reality?” Arthur said. “Don’t worry about it, Arthur, darling. I’m sure it’s nothing.” The lump in his throat grew as a knot grew in his stomach. “Drink your espresso.” He said with a smirk, as Arthur gave a weak smile back.

In the next second, Eames was awake, snapped back through the dream layers to reality, where Cobb stood over him. “Eames, we need you.”

“But...Arthur-” he said before Cobb pulled him out of his seat. “He’ll be fine. He needs to get to the hospital, but he’ll be fine. Now come on.” With that a gun was shoved in to his hand as he was pushed out of the chair and thrust in to battle. He gave one longing look at Arthur, still in the chair, blood seeping out of his chest, and with that, he was off to defend the warehouse.

That night Eames sat by Arthur’s bedside in the hospital, sneaking in long past visiting hours. He slipped the IV in to Arthur’s free arm and his own before relaxing in the uncomfortable hospital chair and letting the sedative take over as he drifted off in to the dream world. They were back in Paris, as he saw Arthur sitting at an outdoor cafe table, fiddling with his totem over and over, constantly letting out swears. “Arthur...” he breathed before moving to take a seat across from the point man. “I can’t wake up, Eames.” he said before a hello was uttered. “Darling...”

“Why can’t I wake up? Why am I stuck here?!” Arthur began shouting, Eames sitting there as calm as he could, but there was a clear sorrow in his eyes. “I don’t know, my love. You were hurt, you’re in the hospital.” Eames watched as Arthur’s expression dropped. “What?” he breathed. Eames closed his eyes, clearing the mist that had begun to cloud his vision. “You were shot, Arthur.” He said quietly. “In the chest. Cobb said you’ll make it, but...”

“You don’t think I will.” Arthur finished, sitting back down. “Well, that explains the constant pain in my chest.” Eames looked back up at Arthur, a sad smile on his lips. “I want you to make it.” He said as he wrapped his fingers around the cup of coffee sitting on the table. “What happens if I don’t.” Arthur asked plainly, staring directly at the forger. “I...don’t know. Nothing like this has ever happened since I joined this team.” Eames said with a sad shrug. “Let’s not focus on that, daring. Please. Let’s just sit and enjoy the coffee.” He pleaded, though he came off as charming as ever. “I don’t want to. I want to wake up.” Arthur barked. Eames felt his body flinch slightly, as he felt his smile drop.

“Please...” he begged. “Darling. For me.”

With that, Arthur let out a frustrated sigh as he sat back down. “Fine, but when I wake up you owe me.”

Right, when you wake up. Thought Eames. He wanted to believe it was true, but there was that sinking feeling inside of him that dreaming would be the only way to see Arthur soon. The two of them sat in silence for a while, their coffee sitting in front of them, each staring wordlessly in to each other’s eyes.

“I don’t want to be stuck here forever.” Arthur finally said, breaking the silence. “I fear I’ll become like Mal. Trapped like some sort of caged animal.”

“Stop talking that way, my darling. You’ll wake up. You and I will wake together in the hospital, and you’ll be fine. You won’t be stuck, I won’t have it.” Eames said as he reached across the table, resting a hand on Arthur’s cheek. “Just promise me one thing, Mr. Eames...” Arthur said quietly. “Oh please, darling. no need for the Mister in there.” Eames said with a small laugh. “Just promise me that no matter what happens, we will never be apart.”

“With all my heart, darling. With all my heart...”

Then, the kick happened. Eames felt his heart drop as he breathed “No...”, yet his eyes slowly opened to the hospital room. His eyes went over to Arthur, expecting to still find him laying there motionless, with the slow beeping of machines echoing.

Arthur’s eyes opened, slowly but surely. Those brown eyes staring directly, but hazily at Eames. “Hi...” he breathed. With that, something broke in Eames. A smile on his face, warm, wet tears falling down his cheeks. “Y-you’re okay...” he choked out. “Darling...” With that he hopped out of the chair and embraced Arthur, laying there in the bed. “Mr. Eames...” he coughed. “I’m afraid you’re hurting me.”

“I’m sorry, my love. I’m just...” Eames said as he pulled back, cupping Arthur’s hands in his face. “I’m just overcome with joy. I was so scared.” His eyes misted over even more, which he closed to prevent himself from blubbering like a complete idiot. “Open your eyes and kiss me, you idiot.” Eames heard Arthur say weakly. “Of course, my darling,” he choked out. So he did - tender and soft, he kissed Arthur.

When they finally parted, Arthur looked up at Eames with a smile. “Now tell me, Mr. Eames.”

“How many times must I tell you, there’s no need for the mister in there...”

“Regardless. Do you still promise that we’ll never be apart?”

“What makes you think I would change my mind in between now and then, love?”

“Just, tell me.” Arthur breathed, taking one of Eames’ hands in his. “I already told you darling. I promise you with all my heart...” And with that, the two of them kissed once more.
