Recipe: South African Curry

May 26, 2011 20:46

I am a real fan of cooking and this is possibly my favourite dish ever. It's a really interesting mix of sweet and spicy, a good mix of flavours, and it's not too difficult. I'm not sure about the availability of some of the ingredients, but the average UK supermarket should stock all these things.

South African Curry, om nom all gone )

Here in the UK, I tend to use Patak's Tikka Masala Curry Paste which is apparently also sold in the US. I'm told that Thai ingredients are much more common in the US than Indian ones, so be careful and make sure you buy Indian, not Thai. They taste quite different and the results will not be the same. Thai curry pastes are usually just labelled 'red', 'yellow' or 'green', whereas Indian ones will be called things like 'Tikka', 'Biryani', etc.

If you do try this recipe out, I hope you enjoy it! :)

Waitwaitwait. Lemme get this straight.

You + Recipes = IT IS EVERYTHING I LOVE, HOLY SHIT. :D

This sounds absolutely fabulous, darling! I will have to give it a try for Mr. Darling and myself. He loves curry like woah, so he'll be happy to give it a try. He's also a huge fan of mixing sweet and savoury, so I'm sure he'll be over the moon. <3 Thank you for spicing up (AHAHAHA PUN) my dinner repetoire!

Honey, do you need any more student-y recipe ideas? Are you eating enough? Do you have any eating restrictions? Likes and dislikes? I AM SO FULL OF RECIPES IT IS OBSCENE. >:O

Thank you so much for sharing, lovey!

Darling, what time is it where you are?! Have you slept at all? (Not that I complain, you see. It's just that I am unaccustomed to receiving messages from you at this hour)

I adore cooking, it is true. It stems from last year in my old flat, where I had no tv and a really bad internet connection, so I couldn't stream things. Thusly, I took up cooking at a hobby and now it is one of my favourite things to do in the whole world.

I would very much like to hear some of your recipes! My only real dislikes are mushrooms. And I'm not too keen on courgettes or seafood. Fish, crab and lobster is all fine, but other things with shells, not so much. SPAM ME WITH YOUR CANADIAN COOKERY :D

It is sadly true that I do not eat enough. This is mostly because I'm very very busy a lot of the time, but now that I'm stuck at home revising, cooking is a nice break. Your maternal feelings are welcomed, too! My own mother does not take such interest in my diet XD

If you do try this out, I hope everything goes well :)

Oh, dear. It... erm... it appears to be five in the morning. A little bit. Oh, my. Boyfriend and I have an awful tendency to eff up our schedules on Sundays nights, as we don't have to be at work in the morning on Mondays. But... oh dear...

I find it a little bit hilarious that you realized what time it was for me before I did, though. That is kind of amazing.

Cooking is amazing, and I'm glad you enjoy it as a hobby! I'm kind of in love with cooking. Boyfriend cooked dinner tonight, but I tend to cook most nights. And he's celiac, so working around eating restrictions is a particular talent of mine. <3 Your likes and dislikes have been noted! (Fortunately, I dislike seafood as well, so you'll be getting no such nonsense recipes from me. XD) I'll think on it while I sleep (I imagine right now would be a good time to get some of that, don't you think?) and come back with some recipes for you. Do you have access to an oven/stove/everything except a blender?

Ahahaha, I'm sure your mother is interested. <3 My own mum and aunt freak out ( ... )

Oh dear, oh dear. I only noticed because I generally only get your messages real-time in either the evening, or if I'm up very early in the morning. You're what, 6 or 7 hours behind me? Something like that.

This year I do actually have a blender (I have moved on to the exciting new arena of soups)! I have most basic kitchenware and if not, I generally improvise (I roll out dough with a wine bottle and cut out biscuits with a shot glass).

I really don't understand how anyone can really afford to buy ready meals all the time, they're so expensive. Everything tastes so much better when you've cooked it, too. I suppose this is the way old people feel about gardening, except you don't have to wait a whole year before you can enjoy the fruit of your efforts.

To my knowledge (and a quick look around the internet), curry paste is gluten-free. It's basically just garlic, onion and spices. If you do go shopping, though, make sure you buy curry paste, not curry sauce. The two are very different things.
