At the dollar store today, I saw a pack of generic sympathy cards. I guess I can imagine a life in which having sympathy cards at your beck and call would be necessary--but it still seems a bit morbid. Oh, your husband died? Let me pull a card out of my back stock and ship it out; I'm sure that will make you feel better.

I actually have a whole bunch of prayer cards around, in case someone dies. Not all funeral homes have them, so I ordered a few when I last sent a card payment in (they send you the cards for free, and then you send the donation when someone passes away. Its all the honor system.)

Its morbid, but useful. My mother does it too, and my grandma, and my aunts.
