I had an odd experience at New Seasons, a local organic/vegetarian/etc. friendly market, in Portland, Ore., this morning. I had to share, because I thought you all might get a giggle.

For what it's worth, I've been solidly vegetarian for a year now, and on and off again for a couple of years before that. I recently moved to Portland, Ore., and after living in small-town Minnesota, it's been a fabulous treat to be in a city that's so vegetarian friendly.

New Seasons is one of my favorite places to shop. My partner and I stopped there after a quick stop at Walgreens to get some stuff for his mother. I picked up a few odds and ends, including some ingredients for a Pad Thai box mix.

We went to a checkout line and he got his things. Our cashier appeared to be slightly physically and mentally disabled, which doesn't matter to me, but becomes pertinent to the story. Be
