Character name: Mephisto Pheles or Johannes Faustus V
Fandom: Ao no Exorcist
Timeline: Chapter 26 of the manga
Age: (^o^) Canon doesn’t provide his age, only that image. We know he’s at least more than two hundred years old.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:

Hot Dog
Mephisto’s first and most commonly seen ability is his transformation from a normal upstanding chairman to a small white longhaired schnauzer. This form allows for many things: attracting women, avoiding being spotted by the paparazzi, sneaking around public places, and squeezing into air ducts. There has been no notation of if this form allows any other powers to him, but he can still speak with others. It is noted that he has a sensitive nose outside of this form, so we can assume this is same when he’s in dog form. Isn’t he just cute?

Always Fabulous
If this could ever be considered a skill Mephisto has it. With a snap of his fingers he’s shown that he can change his clothes in one trademark poof of pink smoke. The only outfits we’ve seen him switch between can be seen here

Dimensional/travel keys/barriers
While the extent of this ability has not been detailed it has been stated that Mephisto is behind the keys exorcists use to travel between locations. By his contribution they are able to use these keys on any door to take themselves or something to another location specifically or simply hide it there. Mephisto himself does not appear to use any of these as he is able to travel without their aide. When he does use his teleportation ability he is frequently making his entrance far more attention grabbing than necessary by having large clouds of pink smoke appear with him.

This and his apparent ability to keep all higher-level demons out of his school grounds are both utilized by the True Cross Order. Whether he chooses to let lower level demons get through has not been stated as they can be spotted in classrooms.

Mephisto at one point summoned a giant candy cuckoo clock that captured his younger brother: Amaimon, and in the most recent chapter of the manga Mephisto called forth a gate demon to do the same thing to another of his brothers: Rin. Inside was a pocket dimension of sorts. He doesn’t use this ability unless necessary for his plans or the True Cross Order’s needs.

Wonder Umbrella
A pink umbrella that acts as a wand for Mephisto: He counts to three in German or uses phrases like “Abra Kadabra” and uses it to create his pink smoke, make confetti, and perform the dimensional hopping listed above. It isn’t often that the man is seen without this umbrella. It can be assumed the umbrella is either a demon itself or is being influenced by some type of magic. The pink object has been seen transformed into a bat of sorts. It is able to suspend Mephisto in mid air. What type of chairman would he be if his umbrella only protected him from the rain after all.

How would they use their abilities?: Just like he does in his canon Mephisto would use his abilities to maintain appearances or put himself in the center stage.. However he doesn’t look for ways to show his full hand. Additionally he wouldn’t use them to fight or defend others without the end result benefiting himself.

Appearance:

Mephisto stands at 6’4” and weighs in at 163lbs. He has mid-length hair, trimmed up in the back with longer sides in the front framing his face. With one side ending at his jaw line and the other a few inches longer than the first. The hair atop his head starts a whitish yellow color at the roots and quickly darkens to a midnight purple at the tips. He has electric green eyes with deep bag underneath from less than an hour of sleep each night. Thin eyebrows and short bangs single out this piercing physical trait. As if his stature did not bring enough attention to his person already. Like any other demon though Mephisto has fangs, claws, and pointed ears: a tail has not been seen from the man.

As his casual outfit is rather complex and excessively detailed I figured I might save some time and give a link to it rather than drown everyone in descriptive writing. Seen here.

Background/Personality:
To start from the beginning in Mephisto’s world there are two dimensions: Assiah: where all human life exists and Gehenna: a mirror realm to Assiah containing demons and creatures of the like. While the two exist as equal and opposite forces of one another communication and travel between the two is almost impossible. Demons from Gehenna are able to pass over into Assiah by possessing anything within it but it is unlikely if those from Assiah are able to do the same to those in Gehenna. Some demons can be guided to Assiah with the aide of exorcists. However in cases like Mephisto’s, as he is a demon; we can’t be sure if he was summoned two hundred years ago, is possessing a human body, or is able to be there on his own.

Normal people can’t see demons and won’t know when they’ve become possessed. Without the presence of a “Mashou”: an injury made by a demon. Which curses the inflicted to see demons, most humans can live a peaceful life. It has not been detailed whether or not common folk can see Mephisto, but he does act as chairman to the very elite private True Cross Academy and must make public appearances at times. At one point he goes as far to walk around in his canine form to avoid being seen by students of his school. So we can assume that for one reason or another he is able to bend these rules.

The True Cross Order is a religious group, not a real organization, made up of exorcists, who work behind the scenes to protect the people of Assiah. Exorcists are trained thoroughly for years within True Cross Academy: the secret exorcist’s school Mephisto is currently chairman for. The school has a front of being a private liberal high school. Students who attend this school are typically from rich families, only those that want to become exorcists attend the cram school after normal courses. This is where all the teaching takes place and where Mephisto takes little involvement. Clearly showing how he likes to remain on the sidelines even in the most basic of exorcist duties.

The skills of an exorcist are broken up into ranks from lowest to highest as: Page, Exwire, Lower Second Class, Lower First Class, Middle Second Class, Middle First Class, Upper Second Class, Upper First Class, Cancer (honorary knight), Arc Knight, and Paladin. Each exorcist is required at least one technical qualification called a “Meister” before they may obtain the title of an exorcist. The five categories are: Knight, Dragoon, Tamer, Aria, and Doctor. These are classifications based on the fighting skills of each individual. Knights use demon swords, Dragoons heavy machinery equipped with demon slaying technology, Tamers offer their blood and draw magic circles to summon and command demons, Aria’s chant scripture from The Bible and destroy demons by saying their fatal verse, and Doctors of course treat and care for the injured.

There are no details on if Mephisto has a Meister class or even if his skills have any sort of influence from the True Cross Order. He is however an honorary knight within the order and upholds a certain level of trust within the organization for his years of loyal service.

Mephisto’s past is very enigmatic. He is a prince of hell, or son of Satan, who cast aside Gehenna two hundred years ago to work with the True Cross Order. His only reasons stated for doing so was to bring peace to both Gehenna and Assia, but no plans have been revealed as to “how” he plans to do so. What we do know is that Mephisto is named as Fujimoto Shirou’s friend and fellow conspirator in the secret upbringing of another son of Satan, Okumura Rin.

Mephisto was prepared to kill Rin upon meeting him after the death of Fujimoto Shirou, because of public safety instead of upholding a promise to protect the boy. It’s thanks to Rin’s unique declaration to “kick Satan’s ass” he decided to let the boy live and work towards making him into the weapon the order needs against the war with Gehenna.

On the condition that Rin keeps his identity as the son of Satan an absolute secret Mephisto allows him into his school to learn to become an exorcist. Despite this he works endlessly to push Rin towards using his demonic abilities. He enlisted one teacher to force the boy into a corner with summoned demons, has them later attack him in his sleep, and even sent another son of Satan-the king of earth “Amaimon”-after Rin to promote the use of the boy’s demonic powers.

On the last attack from Amaimon where Rin lost complete control of himself and exposed what he was to the order something was finally done. Mephisto was taken into the Grigori (the True Cross Order’s judicial system) and tried for betrayal. This is where we get a glimpse at the schemer Mephisto really is. In his punishment trial Mephisto’s secret involvement with allowing Shirou to raise Rin, the failure to exorcise him as an infant, it all was put out in the open. Instead of buckling under the pressure of having angels of a plan revealed Mephisto instead was amused, energetic, and diplomatic with the court. He announced to the Grigori his reasoning for raising Rin: as a weapon for the True Cross Order, to put them on the offensive for the first time in their war with Gehenna with a smile on his face.

He had no qualms with being disciplined: it was clear by his actions that this was just another step towards his end goal. Mephisto is the type to think more than a few moves ahead to ensure he always ends out on top. So even though the Grigori required many conditions to be filled for Rin to live and Mephisto to continue on as chairman, we haven’t seen anything affecting him directly.

Mephisto would rather have others do the dirty work for him: far more an employer than and employee in that sense. The man is an enigma however. Often times his actions look completely out of place and downright unnecessary, yet as time passes it’s clear that a single one doesn’t go without reason.

After all who would suspect a man with more money than sense to have been planning to raise Satan’s son.

As an example of this Mephisto has two names: a public name of Johannes Faustus the fifth which he uses for his image as the chairman for True Cross Academy and his given name: Mephisto Pheles for those whom know him on a more personal level.

Mephisto's life-style additionally has two sides; one being completely and utterly a froof, speaking endlessly of new unusual hobbies, and spending money on himself frivolously while being cheap when spending it on others. He’s flashy, dramatic, and impetuously cheerful. Yet all the while Mephisto understands when a professional attitude is needed and is seen speaking respectfully to others even when he is irritated with them. The other side could be considered the shadow beneath the pink cravat. Mephisto is a schemer, and seems to always be a few steps ahead of everyone all for the sake of his secret goal. He keeps a tight lip of his plans unless hinting towards them will further expedite the wait till his goal. He’d remained ambiguous to accusations until he was in front of the Grigori, where there was greater benefit in truth than lies.

After the incident with the Grigori though Mephisto takes his regular seat on the sidelines while the feared “impure King” is revived. The Impure King was a fearsome demon that was presumed dead, however with the return of his eyes (one of which was a personal belonging of Mephisto) the demon was no longer in its state of immobility. Unfortunately Rin gets himself in trouble again and earns the unwanted attention of the Grigori. However instead of letting him off with another slap on the wrist they decide to sentence him to the exorcism that was intended to be delivered to him as a child. It’s only then that Mephisto appears to imprison Rin within a spell or demon to “assist” them as he claims. Even though he hasn't been on the front lines like the others he knows all about the rising of the Impure King, and rejects the demands for assistance with the matter because he “cant’ stand dirty stuff”. After this he uses his umbrella to gift a pile of cloaks to another exorcist, wishes them good luck, and disappears in his trademark cloud of pink smoke.

The clothes ended up being invisibility cloaks that allowed other exorcists in training to go in and rescue Rin from imprisonment demon, and take him to fight the Impure King while Mephisto found himself a front row seat to the battle about to start. No one is able to find him, but this once more proves the suspicions many have against Mephisto are not without merit.

Samples:
1st person sample

[ A taller, rather amused looking man raises a brow. For one just given the news of their home world being blown to bits he seems to be oddly on the verge of laughter. ]

Interesting! So you’re saying everything is completely gone. You'll have to tell me exactly how that came about, or better yet whom it was behind all of this!

[ The messenger of course is used to an assortment of reactions. Even with Mephisto's amusement from the matter it won't keep them from doing their job. For the chairman however he simply can't get over the hilarity of it all. It's not every day everyone's grand idea's are blown sky high. ]

Not one for details I see-A book? Thank you but I’ve got many more to read-

[ And then finally the bad end of this situation sets in for Mephisto. His manga, cd’s, games, figurines, special limited edition pink play station controllers, his favorite Japan, all of it was gone. If his face could have fallen any further it might have landed on the floor. ]

My collections!! Noooo!!

[The towel handed to him after the book will be put to good use after all. ]

3rd person sample:
Seated in a less than standard room Mephisto couldn’t help the frown on his face.
He was upset for more than a few reasons: Having his whole word disappear had been funny at first, but now that he realized that no one had informed him, Mephisto Pheles, of this plan wasn’t as humorous as before. Granted whomever thought of the idea might have been playing off his own idea to bring peace to both Assiah and Gehenna, but it simply didn’t have the same grandeur of his own plan. Unfortunately Mephisto couldn’t reverse damage this catastrophic.

Mephisto’s frown continued as he stood up. What happened wasn’t the ending he’d envisioned, but it would have to do for now. After all a new place only meant new opportunities, it would be a shame to waste them for what they were.

He really was going to miss the delicious candies, fashion, games, movies… He was going to miss all of Japan. With a sigh and a count of three Mephisto switches from his human form to his much smaller, cuter, canine form. If he was going to go information gathering it was going to be easiest in a form others wouldn’t readily approach with questions.
