[ BLACK BLOOD ]

Mainly for those unfamiliar with the canon of Soul Eater and wish to know more about the uniqueness that Crona possesses. Some spoilers noted below, so do take caution.

BLACK BLOOD

What is Black Blood?
Black Blood is an artificial type of blood of sorts created by the witch Medusa after years of experimenting. As the name suggests, Black Blood is essentially like normal blood in almost every aspect, except that it is imbued with the power and aspects of the Madness Wavelength. And well, its black. Nobody really knows the reason for the change of color, and the one who does know sure isn't going to say anything about it either.

Properties of Black Blood?
As stated above, Black Blood is blood that has been imbued with the aspects of the Madness Wavelength within it. Possessing this blood is almost equivalent to having a constant stream of the Madness Wavelength within you, which in turn severely affects one mental capabilities and makes one vulnerable to insanity. The madness induced via Black Blood varies from person to person, depending on the circumstances - for Crona the kid becomes more violent, while Maka goes into a sort of crazed and demented state of euphoria. Either way, Black Blood has the ability to strip one's ability to feel fear and hesitance, turning them into what could be called the ultimate killing machine.

Effects of Black Blood?
With great power comes a great price - its a common saying, and one that applies very well to Black Blood. In exchange for their sanity and rationality, Black Blood gives its user an incredible boost in physical capabilities. Anybody possessing Black Blood is nigh invulnerable to any physical damage, as the blood hardens (via the user's will) and protects the user from any injuries. This hardening also greatly enhances the user's strength and defence as well as speed, and a more experienced user can even manipulate the usage of Black Blood to his/her advantage, as Ragnarok and Crona demonstrates with their abilities. Hardened Black Blood is incredibly thick and strong (able to cauterize and staunch wounds when necessary), so breaking through it - while possible - will require a great deal of effort.

Still, its not impossible to attack anybody who has Black Blood. As demonstrated in canon itself, Black Blood does not prevent one from attacks directed towards one's soul wavelength - in fact, that is the best possible option to do, as such attacks will disrupt the user's bond with his/her Black Blood and render the user unable to use it for a while until s/he recovers from that attack.

Black Blood with Crona & Ragnarok.
The case of Crona and Ragnarok is a unique one, due to the experiments Medusa conducted on the kid when s/he was still young. Ragnarok was formed by melting him when he was still a normal Weapon and subsequently reforging him via Black Blood, and that blood was injected into Crona, completely replacing the kid's normal blood with it. In that sense, Crona and Ragnarok share something akin to a symbiotic relationship - meaning that Ragnarok needs Crona to live and vice versa. Like this, it also means that Ragnarok is able to control any blood that belongs to Crona, as he is statically linked to it due to being a literal part of Black Blood.

Understanding Crona is the first step to understanding Black Blood, as one must realize that Crona, Ragnarok and the Black Blood are all separate entities living in the same body. Where Crona is the body to house both Ragnarok and the Black Blood, and Ragnarok is the main vessel that holds and controls the Black Blood. In that way, Crona is constantly exposed to the Madness Wavelength, which while has severely affected the kid's psyche (Medusa's treatment did not help in this bit) has also bolstered the kid's defences against the general properties of insanity and madness. Unlike Soul who is vulnerable, Crona is able to control the madness and keep him/herself out of it, preventing him/herself to slip into it unless forced to.

That said, Crona is also easily considered as the most mentally vulnerable after Stein due to the madness dwelling within him/her. Just like Stein the kid can be easily swayed into the Madness under the correct circumstances, and just like him the kid has to fight against it deadly. Still, the kid has lived with it ever since s/he can remember, so for the kid its easier to fight against it - especially with the help of people like Maka around.
