Definitely eccentric - I left school in 1962, and can't remember anyone going home for lunch
For one thing, you'd miss all the lunchtime clubs and activities.

Yes, and the insistence on a hot lunch every day. More work for poor Mum and when she has to be away for a day the twins volunteer to cook, with predictably disastrous results.

Hardly any of us had hot lunch-we took a packed lunch to school. In fine weather, we ate it outside.

My father always came home for lunch and so did my husband when he worked nearby. My brother’s school was a 10 minute walk away and he also went home for lunch. My mother always cooked 2 courses and it was usually a hot meal apart from the odd salad. I always had school lunches though and can only remember a couple of girls going home for lunch. When my daughters went to my old school lunch was compulsory and packed lunches weren’t allowed.
