Needed someone to talk about trying to change the world, huh? Guess you came to the right place. At least as far as the command structure of the Galactica is concerned, I bet good old Karl Agathon is their go-to guy when it comes to trying to change the way things are. Or, at least, when it comes to not being happy with the way they are.
I don't know about the "setting out to change the world" part. That wasn't ever something I thought about. Before the Cylon attack on the Colonies, I was just a Raptor pilot like all the others in the Fleet. The only thing I wanted to change was my rank, so I could finally stop getting crap from Captains and Majors and start handing out some of my own.
And even after the world did change, I've never thought about things that happened as changing the whole world. Yeah, they definitely changed my world, but except for a couple of times, all I was concerned about were me and mine, and trying to make sure that we could all have a life somehow.
Although I guess that sort of is changing the world, huh? When "me and mine" is made up of a human, a Cylon and the world's only hybrid child, trying to figure out a way for the rest of the human race to let us have some peace and make a family and a place for ourselves is a pretty tall order. The thing is, I think we've succeeded pretty damn well, carving out our little piece of the fleet for ourselves. Sharon earned a commission, I've been XO of the Galactica, and Hera goes to day care with all the other Fleet kids.
But yeah, I think all of it changed us just as much, if not more. Sharon is as human as the next person (more human than some humans, as a matter of fact), and me, well... I'm a hell of a lot more comfortable in the role of family man than I ever thought I'd be.
Not bad for the about the biggest gamble ever.
