Well. I have bipolar, and I've found that the music I listen to *extremely* influences how I feel. I don't ever put my whole music collection on shuffle because there's some songs in there that have such a strong pull, one way or the other, that unless I'm feeling the opposite emotion and need to try and get back in neutral... it's silly to have the chance of those songs playing.
In all honesty, when I feel depressed and down (and it's not because I feel so sick I'm going to die, which is a legit excuse for having a crappy mood in my opinion) the best thing for me to do is play some of my mania-inducing songs to help myself out. But that's me, might work differently for you!
