I recently attended a funeral that was also attended by about 20 family members & about 200 people from the goth scene. The guest of honor was indeed a Christian, tho not a church going one by any means. They hired a Lutheran minister who gave a rather offensive speech about how those of us who were not Christians were not getting into heaven like our buddy in the casket. Many people walked out -- those who were not up front & wouldn't cause a disrespectful scene. It was quite odd -- not what John would've wanted his friends to have to hear. He was one of he few Christians I knew that fall into the same category as that pagan guy -- rational human being.
In high school one of my mortal enemies was this overzealous, arrogant evangelical maniac named Michelle Tachzala. In fact, our rivalry goes back as far as 5th grade, where I may have made my first rational argument about God. She claimed that only people of her faith were going to heaven. She would later expand this to "all true Christians" a la the "Left Behind" series. Anyway my original argument came from with reference to the lost tribes in South America, those who have never or were never exposed to Christianity. "So, what, they're going to hell without a chance? That doesn't sound much like the God I've learned about." At first, Michelle gave me a cold, hard, Sam Tobeman "yup." Later on she would think twice about it, but would remain the arrogant extremist of earlier years, at least for the most part. She became better at holding a conversation without condemning the other person (me), but I knew that she would be the last person on earth to pick up a copy of Zen Buddhism

Yeah, the Gospel of Thomas has been subject to a lot of controversey. But I think it makes a good point, because it doesn't say that a community of faith is a bad idea...just that you don't need a priest behind a curtain chanting in Latin to bring you closer to God. It still contains the idea of "where two or three are gathered in my name, Iam there," it just doesn't matter if one of those people happens to be a priest.
