In the "Employers" section of my Facebook profile, I have listed

"Apple Valley League May 2008 - Present
Baseball and Softball Umpire
Syracuse, New York
I crush and/or help realize small children's dreams on the diamond. Summers only."

It's supposed to be a joke. Not my best, but just a quick little light-hearted comment.

I'm taking it down.

And here's why. )

That is difficult... a tough job that I can't imagine. I think you made the right call though.

Well, I know nothing about softball (see Spring Weekend), but it seems like you made the right call. That girl will either become a better pitcher through practice, play another position or quit the game all together. The world'll keep turnin' and I'll still be a midget.

Agreed. It sucks, but speaking as someone who struggled in a sport they loved, situations like that make you work harder or get out if it's too much for you. That pitcher will be just fine-- you can't win them all. Those are the type of lessons sports are great at teaching.

As a girl who was kicked off her middle school softball team for being an insurance liability (true story) I can't speak to the validity of the call, but I'm sure it was hard to make. There's probably a metaphor in there somewhere, with which I'll get back to you when I unearth it.
