Sunrise came late.
It was the darkest day, the day when the year turned back towards hope, and light, and new beginnings.
Merlin had climbed the battlements to properly greet the rising sun from a vantage point above the ground. He watched the shimmering orb slowly emerging, the sky brightening, the long night fleeing, and he raised his hands in welcome and blessing.
Out in the open, beyond the woods, the Druids would be performing their winter solstice rituals. And he was their Emrys. He ought to be there, but-
"So this is where I finally find you. Instead of waiting on me, you're loitering around up here in the frosty air."
"I'm far from loitering, Arthur. This isn't just any new day," Merlin replied in a low voice, refusing to join in lighthearted banter during this solemn hour. He didn't turn away from the wintry view in front of them.
"I know." Stepping closer and embracing him from behind, Arthur rested his chin on Merlin's shoulder. "The year is turning. We begin anew."
The pale midwinter sunlight washed over the two of them, and Merlin leaned back, reassured. Wrapped in Arthur's strong arms, the both of them warmed by Arthur's long Pendragon-red cloak, all his misgivings subsided.
This was where he belonged. Right here, with the golden prince whose kingship would one day usher in a brilliant reign, a new spring for Albion. Here, with the one person who represented the brightest hope of good things to come for them all.
One day, Merlin knew, the Druids would be able to freely perform their solstice rituals with the King of all Albion present. Until then, his place was at Arthur's side - protecting him, serving him, and guiding him one step at the time towards that sunlit new era.
