Inspired by a fic I read where Merlin was a doctor and magic was an everyday thing. I should look it up and give proper credit.
He stared at himself in the mirror. He looked the same, nobody could tell. Nobody would even guess, only in jest. It just didn’t happen like this. There were institutes and facilities and whole research groups dedicated to the phenomenon of male pregnancy. It was extremely rare and some couples tried for years and tore themselves to pieces trying to achieve this. It seemed to be a mystery of nature that couldn’t be tamed by technology. And yet here he was. He didn’t even have magic. He had thought he had caught a bug or something. The doc had run the tests three times and contacted a specialist. There was no doubt. This was actually happening.
Arthur turned to look at himself from the side. He pulled the hem of his boxers a bit down to expose all of his stomach. There were people in there now. Someone really tiny and not quite there yet.
Merlin had known since high school that he wanted a career in Magicinal Medicine and Arthur was dedicated to the family business. They had only stayed roommates these last years because Arthur would hate for Merlin to spend his hard earned money on a place of his own when he needed to save up for his studies and go live half across the country. Merlin was going to be the best doctor there ever was. Arthur wasn’t going to stand in his way. It was goodbye, that’s all, a desperate goodbye the night before Merlin left. In the dark with the curtains closed, because they had both silently agreed years ago that this - them - simply couldn’t be. It was the end of an era and the start of a new. Their lives were heading in the direction they wanted. The future so bright they had to wear shades. And now this.
He avoids looking at his face, he looks like hell. Instead he moves to what was Merlin’s room and stares at the abandoned bed. It would become the baby’s room now, perhaps, if all went well. He almost laughs at himself. “Well.” A huge mess is what this was. How many times had his father warned him about women who only wanted piece of the family fortune and how they might try to pregnant to get what they wanted. And instead he had become one of them, trapping them both. He couldn’t tell Merlin about this. And how could he not tell Merlin?
He couldn’t take it away either. He couldn’t. Not Merlin’s baby. Not Merlin and his baby. He didn’t think it could be done even if he had wanted to. No-one had ever done an abortion on a man before, and with all that mystical magical stuff going on in there perhaps it might go really bad.
He went back to his own bed and curled up under the covers. He missed Merlin so much it hurt. Maybe the baby missed him too. Perhaps he or she required magic which Arthur couldn’t give. He was the first pregnant male on record who didn’t have a partner, ever. What if he messed things up and damaged the baby? He didn't even know any lullabies. Merlin probably did. He always sang in the shower when he was in a good mood and hummed to himself when he made breakfast.
He eventually fell asleep far into the night, clutching a pillow close to his chest.
