Merlin knows what he has to do, or at least he thinks he does. After seeing Uther on the afternoon, Merlin realized the extent of the damage he had done by his curiosity running free and letting out the goblin from his small prison. Still it doesn't mean he doesn't find Uther’s new hair -or lack of it- endlessly funny and amusing. He shakes his head trying to sober himself up as he steps in the shadows of Arthur’s chambers. Unlike other nights he’s not there to seek Arthur’s warmth, or to wake him up and see a deep scowl on his face before he tries to get back at him by trapping him between his strong arms. He’s got more urgent matters to solve for the time being. He's on the hunt for gold.
He tries to be as quiet as he can, every step taking him closer to Arthur’s bed, he crouches and seeks the little chest of gold coins he knows Arthur keeps hidden in there, a part of him feels guilty for practically robbing him, but he firmly reminds himself it’s only borrowing because he pretends to give them back once the goblin falls in his trap. He wouldn't do it if his neck wasn't on the line.
Arthur stirs a bit, rolls over and Merlin has a chance to steal a look of his face smashed against the pillows. He bites his lips and forces his body to walk away, before his hands reach over and run over the messy hair.
But before he’s victoriously standing outside the door with the gold his clumsiness steps in the way and Arthur wakes up. He’s got two options, either he comes out from his hiding place and distracts Arthur like only he can or use magic and escape. In the end he watches Arthur fighting blindly under the bed drapes looking utterly ridiculous, Merlin can’t wipe the grin from his face. In the morning he’ll make it up to Arthur, even if he does deserve it for all the grief he gives Merlin.
