There are white flakes dancing in the air, twinkling as they descend through the darkness in the courtyard to catch the light streaming from the stained glass windows of the great hall. Merlin allows himself to stop for a moment on his hasty way back from helping Gaius. He draws a deep breath, lets silence and calm settle in his chest, and raises his face to the falling snow.
Inside the hall the proper Yule celebrations have started. Many would say that the blazing fires, the bowls of holly, the roast pig with its apple, all the food and drink in abundance, the jolly songs and cheers and laughter represent a special sort of Yule magic, one that is allowed even in Camelot, one that is necessary to turn the year around towards sunnier and warmer days. Merlin also knows that in the deep woods, the Druid rituals have now commenced, invoking the ancient sorcery of the midwinter solstice.
But as the cold bright flakes melt on his hot cheeks and dot his red scarf, Merlin smiles to the night and knows in his heart that this, nature's own silent and abundant glitter, this is the true magic of Yule.
