BOOK: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister (Gregory Maguire)

Oooh, pretty book.

Yes, I really liked it. I was pretty sympathetic to Iris all the way through, until I read the epilogue and looked back and thought, well, actually, she was alot like her mother, arrogant and pushy and stubborn. I expected the traditional 'alternate' telling, where Cinderella wasn't the kind and generous person she is in the fairy tale, and the stepsisters are not evil and stuff, that it wasn't until the very end, when Clara does exactly what Cinderella did and saves her sisters, that it isn't like that. Which I should have expected; it's more complex than that. I liked the parts about the different kinds of beauty and beauty of charity. Nice suprise to find out that the prince might have been interested in Iris after all and the epilogue by the suprisingly aware Ruth.

(Also, obvious Casper/Master slash. Indeed.)
