Paul almost slips up a dozen times in the first show of the series. He does the same thing the second week, and again the in third. He's getting used to Ian’s slight look of panic from three metres away, getting used to the post-show dressing room confrontations.
Paul knows he should be more careful, but damnit, he's not used to censoring himself. He doesn't like doing it either. He's used to making jokes at Ian's expense and he wants to add in all the jokes about Ian's choice of breakfast cereals and how he hogs the shower in the morning and uses all of Paul's shampoo even though he has no hair to speak of. Wants Ian to come back with how Paul hogs the covers and eats breakfast cereals that are more sugar than actual food.
But Ian wants it to be a secret and Ian's got more to lose than Paul has. Even though Ian stays at Paul's every weeknight, telling his wife that it saves the commute every morning. Even though when Paul watches the show on a Friday, after Ian has gone back to his family and the apartment feels emptier than ever, Paul can’t believe the audience hasn't got it, because all he and Ian do is smile at each other across the studio.
Ian's not ready to make that commitment, not ready to throw away his perfect family. Paul hates it, but it doesn't stop him whispering I love you, I love you, I love you as they lie tangled together at night. And Ian always pretends to be asleep. And Paul hates it.
