I just put a holster case and lens case in another backpack or bag - otherwise, look for photo backpacks, they usually have some extra space for keys/wallet/phone and other small items.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to go with the holster bag option.

I'm still using a Tamrac bag that's been with me for over 10 years. It has compartments that can be moved around with velcro patches. I don't see much sense in getting a small bag with just room enough for my camera, which has a pretty large (f 2.8) zoom lens. The exception would be if the environment was hostile (e.g. dusty).

If you have an additional lens that you'll use fairly often, it makes sense to carry a bag with room for everything. If you think you can make do with just one lens on a particular day, you might want to just take the camera, preferably with a protective filter over the lens.

Thanks! I think it makes more sense to have one bag with room for everything too, but it's looking like it'll be easier to find a bag for travelling if I buy a small top-loading bag for my camera that I can carry inside it.

Try the Lowepro Versapack. I was looking for that exact thing and it fits my needs perfectly.
Good luck!
