Summary: Jumping 5 years into the future.
From the outside, anyone would think that Bridget would be the fretter. The parent who worries and stresses about their child's well-being. But, truthfully, it's not. Tabrett is the one who worries. She has since the very moment that Mia was born.
Bridget had always believed in their daughter. She had carried her for 9 months, given her life - she knew the strength that their daughter held, that was in her. She knew their daughter could do anything she set her mind to, no matter what stood in her way.
So Bridget did her best to try and sooth her wife. It's not that she didn't trust their daughter; she was just over-protective of her, the same way she had been when Bridget had been pregnant.

Tabrett checked the bag for the fourth time that morning, making sure all the esentials were packed, plus any possible items that may be needed.
"Lunch." Tabrett said suddenly, not glancing up from the bag. "She needs lunch."
A purple Dora lunch box appeared in front of her face, and Tabrett looked up, coming eye to eye with her wife. Bridget was smiling softly, a knowing slime playing on her lips.
"With the crusts cut off, and lots of extra snacks." Bridget promised, as Tabrett took the box and tucked it securely in the backpack, doing up the zipper. She sighed, turning to face Bridget and leaning back against the kitchen table.
"Bridget..It's her first day of school. What if she's not okay?" Tabrett murmured, looking down at her feet, hair falling around her face.
Bridget could have almost laughed. Tabrett looked like she was the one heading off to school, all nervous and unsure, not their daughter.
"Mia will be fine." Bridget promised, tapping Tabrett's chin up with a slender finger. "How many times have we had this conversation over the last 5 years? When you will trust me that Mia is stronger than you give her credit for?"
"Hey," Tabrett's eyes blazed for a moment. "Don't make it sound like I don't believe in her. You know I do. I just... don't want anything to hurt her. To me, she is still so tiny, so precious."
Bridget smiled. "Tab, we will always feel like that about her; she's our daughter. But we have to see who she is as well, who she is growing into. She is a tough girl, just like her Mum." Bridget grinned, nudging Tabrett, whose lips curved into a slight smile. "But, hey. That doesn't mean we can't watch over her. I don't want you to ever stop being there to protect her, should she need it."
"I will always be there, for both of you." Tabrett promised, leaning in to kiss Bridget, cupping her cheek. Bridget melted into the other woman, enjoying the kiss. They had been far from celibate since their daughter was born, but that didn't mean that a tender moment was cherished.
There was a hand on Tabrett's leg, lightly pushing her aside, and both women looked down to see Mia trying to scramble up to the table. Bridget laughed, and Tabrett just shook her head, moving so their daughter could pass.
'Are you excited for school?' Bridget both signed and spoke, while Tabrett grabbed the cereal from the cupboard.
'Ma, what is it going to be like? How many kids will be there? Will there be other deaf kids?' She chatted, making both her parents smile.
'Well,' Bridget took a seat opposite Mia. 'You will get your teacher today, and meet there other kids in your class. There is going to be one other deaf boy in your class.'
Mia was going to attending a school in Auckland. It was a normal school, with an extra Special Education building attached. They had considered sending her to a purely Special Education school, but they thought it was better that she still be given the opportunity to interact with hearing kids, the same way that she will have to in life. So Mia would be doing most of her classes in the Special Ed section of the school, but some classes she would do with the rest of the school, as well a break times. Mia was excited to be meeting so many new friends, though she was hardly deprived of them from her time at pre-school.
'Need me to do your hair?' Tabrett offered, once she'd topped Mia's cereal with milk. The girl shook her head, sending the dark chocolate curls flying.
'Can I leave it out?' She asked, before picking up her spoon, and Tabrett grinned.
'Of course you can.' She kissed her daughter's head, pulling the red polka-dot beanie down over her ears. 'You can have it however you want.'
