Room 223, Late morning

Dec 22, 2006 16:17

As far as Cameron was concerned, this week couldn't be over fast enough. He had only one more exam left, but he was finding it hard to concentrate on his notes as he kept thinking about the holidays. With a sigh, he forced his thoughts back to the books in front of him.

Jack had slowly made his way down to the second floor and was now staring at the door to 223. He really didn't want to be here, but he didn't have a choice. Sparing a moment to wish he'd brought anything alcoholic, he knocked on the door.

More than eager to get away from studying, Cameron jumped up from his deskchair and opened the door. He looked surprised to find Jack there.

"Harkness?"

time-agent

"Last time I checked I was." Hands shoved in his pockets, he flashed Cameron a quick smile. "You got a minute?"

cameronmitchell

"Yeah, sure. The whole studying thing is going to my brain in a bad way," Cameron said casually. Trying not to show his puzzlement, he stepped back to let Jack in.

Jack stepped inside, looking quickly around the room, but stayed near the door. "This won't take long." He hoped. Weighing it up, he decided to get straight to the point. "I need you to tell me what you know about the Time Agency."

cameronmitchell

Cameron really wasn't sure if a conversation about the Time Agency could be short.

"Did you remember something or did Sam talk to you?" he asked, motioning to the couch for Jack to sit down. Even if he didn't really expect him to take the offer.

time-agent

"There's nothing to remember." It came out quieter than he'd intended, almost a whisper, and he cleared his throat and tried again. "No. Whatever I knew is gone."

Jack eyed the couch, then Cameron, then shrugged and perched on the edge of it. "Sam told me you said they were bad news, something about them wanting Vala, wanting her to wipe my memory."

cameronmitchell

"They are bad news," Cameron agreed, toeing the edge of his bed as he didn't sit down himself.

"About a year ago, the Time Agency contacted Vala and offered her a position. They said that you weren't working out so they needed a replacement. I guess it was some kind of test or something, but they gave her this device to wipe your mind so you wouldn't remember them. She thought she could outsmart them and you could just fake not remembering, but they caught up and wiped your mind anyway," he explained.

time-agent

"I used to work for them." Jack's voice was completely flat, face blank, and he stared up at him. There had to be something else, something that would make this make sense. "How do you know? Did you see any of this for youself or did Vala just tell you?" He could tell Cameron wasn't lying, but it didn't mean he hadn't been lied to.

cameronmitchell

"Partly. I saw the device. I saw you after they wiped your mind. Heck, you even slept in our room that night," he replied calmly. "Vala might have been a good liar, but I knew her and she was genuinely scared about what this Time Agency would come up with next."

time-agent

Jack looked at him sharply. "You can't stand me. Why in the hell would you let me stay with you?" Absolutely irrelevant, but it was the easiest question to ask.

cameronmitchell

"Because Vala insisted?" Cameron said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Because you don't put someone out who has no clue how they just got screwed over."

time-agent

"Huh." Jack stared at him, surprised, then said, "Well, thanks." He rubbed a hand across his mouth, then drew in a deep breath. "You have no idea how much I want you to be lying. But you aren't, are you?"

cameronmitchell

He shook his head. "No. Sorry, man. I don't joke around about stuff this serious. When you came back, you sounded pretty convinced the Time Agency had nothing to do with your memory loss so I let it go, but when Sam brought it up... She had to know."

time-agent

"This time they didn't. I know that much, at least. But I get it, and you're right, Sam had to know." Jack slumped back against the couch and stared at the ceiling, feeling the slow burn of anger building. "You have any idea what I was doing for them? Or for how long? Or why?"

cameronmitchell

"No," he shook his head. "Sorry, man. Vala might have, but she's living the high life somewhere else right now."

time-agent

"Lucky for some. Okay." Jack pulled himself up off the couch and looked seriously at Cameron. "You didn't have to tell me this - part of me wishes you hadn't - so thanks."

cameronmitchell

"You had a right to know," Cameron said simply. "I'm sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear."

time-agent

"Not your fault." Jack started to leave, but paused in the doorway. "Cameron-- " He hesitated, pretty sure it wouldn't mean anything, but he needed to say it anyway. "I wouldn't let anything happen to Sam."

cameronmitchell

Cameron stayed quiet for a moment before he nodded. "Good."

time-agent

Jack returned the nod and left, heading down the hall to his room.

With a sigh, Cameron sat back down at his desk. He poked at his notes, having the feeling that the whole concentrating thing wasn't going to improve any time soon.
