I've seen a couple films that have scared me more than The Exorcist (though the re-release definitely added a lot to the film and made it better/creepier), but I have never read a book that scared me more. Not even close.

Have you seen the two prequel versions? They're VERY different movies, and neither won particularly great, but both with Stellan Skarsgard as Merrin.

Also, re: coming in to horror at awkward/horrifying moments -- Even though I've seen The Omen a couple times, once it was on telly and I clicked over to it just in time for the priest-on-a-stick moment. Haven't had the desire to watch the movie since...

I think I read the book. It's sad that I can't be 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure that I did read it.

I think I saw one of the prequels but I don't remember it.
(My memory is terrible!)

As for The Omen, I've seen it, but again I don't remember anything!

The prequels are interesting, especially for film nerds in seeing what two directors (and studio involvement) did with essentially the same film concept. Obviously neither one comes close to the original, though.
The Omen is really good, but I haven't seen it all the way through in some time. Once you click into it just as the priest is getting skewered... well, it's kind of like flipping to The Exorcist during the cross masturbation scene. You're just kinda done with it for awhile.
