That's because old people are cute and grandparently and we can't blame anything on them. This is also the same reason that raising the retirement age or cutting SS benefits is so unpopular. We coddle the old people too much, I say. Let them take care of themselves! :)

While I agree that there is a considerable amount of blaming going on... in some ways, it's justified.

African American culture is vastly different from yours or mine (given that we're white). There is a HUGE amount of stigma toward gays from that particular culture. It is SO MUCH WORSE than how white people stigmatize gays.

So, I'm not blaming the blacks. I have nothing against them. But, the high turnout of that community is a good explanation for why prop 8 failed. Homosexuality is not at all socially acceptable if you're black. It's just not.

I know that homosexuality is much less acceptable among the black community than among the white community. But it's also much less acceptable among, say, old white people, than among young white people. And while I think it is absolutely worth the gay community starting a dialogue with the black community about homosexuality within the black community - frankly, that ought to have happened ages ago - starting in now with the blame is not at all useful. And I find it disturbing that it is the black community that has by and large been almost exclusively demonized and blamed for Prop 8, when it is hardly exclusively their fault, and if anything it is less than fault than the fault of old white people.
