“Yapari ne…” she muttered to herself. “Ryosuke wa mada inai.”

Shida sighed. It was Saturday, the day they promised to spend with each other. Shida, remembering what Yamada said that day about crying, decided to come to their meeting place which is at Kitanomaru Park, thirty minutes earlier than the planned time. But, along the way to the park, she received a text from Yamada saying that he’ll be late because their taping was a bit delayed. He apologized and asked her to wait for him. Shida, who wasn’t able to think of a better idea, just replied ‘okay’.

Shida decided to sit on the bench while waiting for Yamada. Since it was a special day, she wore her newly bought blue and white summer floral dress and flat doll shoes. The moment she sat down, she bowed her head and touched the locket with the tip of her index finger. That conversation with Kamiki was still troubling her mind. Was it really bad that she let something slip to her boyfriend? It’s not like he figured out something because of what she said but is it not right to tell him if ever?

Shida hated feeling helpless. In fact, she hated the locket at that moment. Without that locket, she might have had an ordinary life. She and Ryosuke could be an ordinary couple. But no, she has to keep a secret from him. She has to lie over and over again. And Shida hated lying to him. But still…

She owes a lot to that locket because in the first place, if it wasn’t for that locket, she couldn’t have met Yamada.  She might have been old by now or if truth be told, dead. That locket had saved her life more than once. It keeps her immortal, forever teenager, forever eighteen. She and Kamiki used to move from place to place so that no one would find out their nature. But when they moved to Japan, when she met Yamada and became his girlfriend, Kamiki and Shida started having a lot of arguments because Shida refuses to migrate after their eight months stay. Shida made up a lot of reasons but Kamiki knows that she’s doing that because of Yamada. And so, Kamiki hates him. Kamiki was even more infuriated when Shida told him that she might just be prepared enough to remove the locket and disown its powers.

Shida doesn’t blame him. After all, she and Kamiki were destined to stay by each other forever. They are the only living ones left from their lineage. She shouldn’t have been with Yamada. She should have been with Kamiki. Shida knows she hurt him that’s why he’s angry. She couldn’t deny the fact that Kamiki actually loves her…

“AAAHHHHHHH!”

Shida was suddenly disconnected from her trail of thoughts. When she looked up, she saw a red ball flying until it fell on the middle of the street. When she looked to her left, she saw three kids, two boys and a girl, looking transfixed at it as if they don’t know what to do. Shida assumed their ages range from four to six.

“I’ll get it!” Shida heard the boy wearing a red cap said to the other two.

“Demo, mama will get angry if we go there without her…” the girl said with her squeaky voice.

“What should we do then?”

Shida stoop up from the bench and approached the kids.

“Ne, does that ball belongs to you?” asked Shida politely.

“Hai…” the other boy, wearing eyeglasses replied.

“Chotto ne, I’ll go get it,” Shida smiled at them.

“Arigatou neechan!” the girl said in delight.

“Dou itashimashite,” said Mirai, touching the girl’s head.

She then made her way to the street. Shida didn’t bother look around for she knew that vehicles barely use that route. So when she was in the middle of the street, she crouched down and picked up the ball with both of her hands.

“Yosh!” Shida said delightfully.

Just when she was about to stand up, she heard someone shout her name. And then everything felt as if it she was watching a slow-motion movie. She turned her head only to see Yamada. She was about to smile at him when she saw that there’s something wrong. He was running and doing his best to reach her. Something was definitely weird with his expression. Shida tried looking around and other people too were looking at her with shock on their faces. It’s as if they were seeing a ghost. And then she heard it, the loud squealing of tires and the sound of crunching leaves and gravel on the path where she was crouched down. When she looked up, she saw a black car speeding towards her.

And then it all happened in a flash. She couldn’t move until she felt a hand pushed her. And as she fell into safe grounds, she heard the undeniable sound of metal crashing with a human body. When Shida sat up, she felt dazed. She looked around and her heart almost stopped beating.

There he was, Yamada lying unconscious in front of the car. The driver was already crouched down on his side, shaking him up. Shida moved unconsciously to his side. Other people also started running towards them. Mirai had a blank expression on her face as if she just couldn’t absorb what was happening. She stayed mute for a while until she saw blood pouring out from Yamada’s head.

“Ne…” muttered Shida, her voice cracking. She was shaking Yamada gently by the arm. “Ryo-chan…Ne, Ryo-chan…wake up…”

When Yamada still had his eyes closed, Shida started tearing up. She was shaking Yamada madly as if he was only playing a joke on her.

“Ryo-chan! WAKE UP!” Shida shouted, crying noisily. She was now shaking him up frantically. “Hiroi Ryo-chan! Yamenasai! Don’t do this to me! Ryo-chan! Ryo-chan!!!! Nande! Baka Ryosuke!!” Shida broke into wild tears. All of her energy was wasting away that she can’t handle everything anymore.

“Ryo-chan….ryo-chan…” she continuously sobbed.

“Ne, yamete…” a guy said, pulling her hands away from Yamada. “We need to take him now to the hospital.”

They carried him to the car and left Shida crying there on the floor. Just when the car was already starting up, someone forcefully gripped Shida by the wrist and pulled her back to the park. Shida was still crying madly, her eyes were puffy red that she couldn’t see who was pulling her.

“Ryo-chan…ryo-chan…” she was still muttering his name until she crouched down on the ground with her arms buckling her knees. The one who pulled her crouched down in front of her.

“See what happens?!” it was Kamiki, whispering to her frantically but there was something different from his tone. It was not the usual husky voice he used when talking to her these days. There was a mix of concern in it. “I already told you it would be unwise to go out with a mortal like him!”

Shida was just staring at him helplessly, as if she didn’t know who he was, or as if she didn’t know her own self. This helplessness was unbearable for Kamiki that he turned away.

“Mirai…” he whispered.

And then Shida stood up suddenly that Kamiki was a bit startled. Shida wiped her tears and then walked away as if she was going somewhere she didn’t exactly know.

“Ne, Mirai! Where are you going?”

Shida walked continuously and then suddenly came to a halt. She halfheartedly turned to him and said in a dead tone, “Byoin.”

--------------------------

When Shida arrived at the right hospital, it was to find out that Yamada was miraculously revived but unfortunately, he was in a coma state. Shida didn’t know if she should be relieved or what.

When she opened the hospital room assigned to Yamada, she saw that his parents and her sister, Misaki, were already there. They looked at her and Shida saw that they were also crying.

“Shida-san,” sobbed Misaki.

Shida went lifelessly by Misaki’s side and faced Yamada’s parents. She bowed down to them and said, “Konnichiwa.”

“Shida-chan,” said Yamada’s mom. She was still teary-eyed. “I know Ryosuke was supposed to meet you by the park…what happened?”

Shida wasn’t able to answer at first and then tears started pouring out of her eyes as she stared at his parents.

“Gomen nasai!” said Shida loudly. “It was me…the one should have been lying there is me! Ryo-chan…Ryo-chan pulled me out of the way just as I was about to be hit. Hontou ni gomen nasai…everything’s my fault…it should have been me…I know it is…”

Yamada’s mom pulled her into a gentle hug. Even his dad patted Shida on the back.

“It’s not your fault, honey,” Yamada’s mom comforted her. “Ryosuke chose to do so. He chose to save you rather than save himself. It was his decision. And I know he’s glad that he accomplished what he intended to do. Just be assured that he loves you to the extent that he’s willing to give up his life for you…”

“Demo…” sobbed Shida.

“He wouldn’t like it if he knows you’re sad because of his decision. We’re not angry at you in the tiniest bit Shida,” she smiled at her. “Let’s just pray Ryosuke will never surrender.”

“Arigatou…okaasan, otousan…” Shida said, managing to smile at them.

Eventhough Yamada’s mother said so, Shida knows that they resent her even if it was just a little bit. She knows that it was hard for them to accept that Ryosuke was in coma and that they almost lost him forever. When Shida said it was her fault, she really meant it. If Ryosuke only knew…if he was only knowledgeable of her secret, he shouldn’t have in the first place save her. Shida could have survived even if no one was there…

Shida visits Yamada regularly. For a week everything just stayed the same, Ryosuke not moving like he’s already dead. But then for the coming weeks, his situation got even worse. His heartbeat was slowly weakening. Shida couldn’t bear anymore seeing Ryosuke suffering. So she finally decided on something that’ll

surely change her destiny.
